Kuiu is having a pretty decent sale. Wifey has been asking me for a Christmas list. Just so happens Kuiu has a few things I need for my 2019 DIY elk hunt.

I just found an under armour rain shell listed at $199, however it was at Ross with no price tag on it manager comes looks at it and asks if $22.95 would be ok!!!!1118180210.jpg 1118180210_HDR.jpg

Yes and no, depends how many hunters are in an area. So many people these days use scents, calls, decoys, sit the same spot every hunt so theres a lot that goes into factoring pressure on deer. For me hunting places on public land I find it best to hunt the wind, no more than 1/2 day in a the same spot and use no attractant scents, calls, etc... what so ever.

I'm no expert in the matter but deer quotas / tags varies from state to state. Most does my way have twins and the deer have no winter for them to survive. I have three antlered or antlerless tags and two antlerless whitetail deer tags in Texas...but a Texas doe weighs like nothing like one up north so 2 = 1. If I get 3 deer in a year I consider the freezer full. As far as finding mature deer goes...I like Texas's approach on antler restrictions, some areas a buck's rack needs to be wider than the ears 13" or spike. Much better practices than Vermont who has a 3 points antler restriction (one horn with two points) so spikes can grow longer spikes...but rumor is they are revisiting this idea.

    https://tpwd.texas.gov/landwater/land/wildlife_management/deer/antler_restrictions/

I got my dad Vortex Diamondback 10x42 bino's and he loves them. I use the Vortex Solo 8x36 Monocular for bowhunting. Where I hunt in the Texas brush I can see up to 60-80 yards tops and the monocular works great, even in low light and doesn't fog up.

Great shot! Bizarre how she ran that far!

    Congrats!

I haven't shopped at Ross's in years...I might have to go check one out ...

I share your thoughts about not using lots of scents and calls and terrible attempts at rattling. I heard one that sounded like he was just making a tapping pattern. The weather/ wind are the bigest factors I try and take into account.
While the population around me is very healthy there are still lots of newer hunters that will do all that and it does have some impact on their patterns.
Now, if you add cars into the mix they could care less. I almost hit 2 last night driving home.

The one i found the rain shell at had an UA medium weight wool type material for $79.99. And they tend to spread out inventory, so I checked 3 stores all had something. One had a Columbia mossy oak light fleece h2o resistant for $39.99, it had the Iowa hawk embroidered on it but who cares.
I say medium weight but it was thicker then my m-65 feild coat with the liner. Im considering it but it's not pressing. I really like the m65 it's very quiet to move in.

Sometimes it still pays off to walk in a store. Good find! A couple of years ago I found an Under Armor camo jacket that was regular $175, on sale 80% off at a Gander Mtn. The best sales are now thru Feb.

Also check out Maven Built. I needed new binos for my elk hunt and it was either Maven and Vortex, tried them both and chose Maven.

How did you find out they will be on sale? I don’t see anything on their site. Look like nice binos.

Just wrapped up 23 days of vacation and didn’t do anything but hunt,20 days of bow hunting and 3 days of shotgun hunting. Seen a lot of deer, had decent rut activity and seen some pretty good bucks. I was holding out for a 150 inch or bigger and though I seen a few, they presented no shot opportunities and they disappeared for gun season. It’s back to work tomorrow and I’m taking a days off from hunting to let things settle down. Plenty of hunting left, and looking forward to late season when the deer will be hitting the food sources again
