I know I am resurrecting an older post but checking to see whether anyone has found any solution or heard anything from Toyota on this? I just noticed a numbed of spots on my doors. I swear they appeared almost over night.

I did clay bar them and that improved it but has not completely fixed the issue.

Seen a patch pen by Jeep for this kind of thing. One side was a micro sander to clear away the surface paint. Other was touch up paint pen. Factory color codes.

    Does Toyota have one?

Edit- my 2013 has this issue too, but I also live right next to the ocean...

There is something similar. The Dupli-color pen has the sander piece, touch up paint and a clear coat. Color is pretty spot on, not perfect though.

Dealer stated to me that the rust is caused by impact from a rock which damaged the paint. Not sure if I believe that

seems like a poor explanation for so man trucks having spots in the same spot of the door...

I have the same thing in the same spot on my black truck. It's rock chips, if you look closely you can see the tiny impact hole where the paint chipped away and it then rusts.

Had this on my 09 on both sides in ~20 diff spots. I *GENTLY* ground them all out with a rounded nose grinding tool on my dremel, cleaned them with denatured alcohol, then 'filled' them with the pen end of the touch-up paint. That was two years ago, and of the 20 or so I did, none of them rusted again, but I do see 2 or 3 new spots. I also had rubbing on my fenders from the lights on both sides. Ground and painted that too before it spread. That's also held.

Same issue here - 2013 - it is not from rock chips as it's bubbling from the inside. I first noticed mine on one door, and Toyota had it fixed under warranty. The rest of the doors showed up after warranty was up and dealership refused to do anything. Only solution is posted above - grind down pinhole and touch up paint. Or take to body shop and they'll reprint the entire door (which they did to my first door).

I've got the same issue on my 2014. The paint is bubbling in multiple spots on every door frame. The last coat of wax I put on the truck was last summer, so they appeared sometime between now and then. There are no obvious chips, the paint just looks to be bubbling.
I guess I'll have to pick up a paint/clear coat pen and try to nip it in the bud now before it gets too serious.
Seems like there is definitely some kind of design flaw going on here. My wife's 2010 Corolla has no sign of any rust even starting anywhere on the body, so that says something.

The fact that they are all front facing actually makes it seem like a logical explanation.

Got the same on my silver 2012. It's not rock chips!! This is a paint fault for sure. Its poor paint...thinner paint. Robot took a day off on paint day.

Anyone consider putting some strips of PPF on each of these sections to protect from the contaminants? I’m getting my hood/fenders done this week and am considering doing this. My window frames are still good so I feel comfortable covering them up and hopefully prevent this issue

    This is happening to me.
This is not from external damage. The spots are rusting from under the paint.
    Here is the TSB:
    https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10160753-9999.pdf

Unfortunately, my truck has slightly over 60k miles on it and I bought it used, so I doubt Toyota will take care of it.

    This makes no sense.
They released a TSB for it offering to cover it under warranty, a warranty that by age, none of the trucks were eligible for the date it was issued.
Also makes no sense that it only covers 2012 and newer. My white 2011 has the same issue.
My black 2010 has not a spec of rust or missing paint in those areas.

for those with extended warranty, don’t think there’s too many of them out there. Toyota knew what they were doing with that TSB.

It is an interesting and disappointing change from Toyota. They typically have been really good at addressing issues like this, even with older vehicles. A friend got a brand new 3.0 V6 during the headgasket recall years ago, my 2010 got brand new headlights after the DRL/blinkers melted and like 1/2 this board has new frames complements of Toyota.
