TLDR: Threw a crank rod in #1 cylinder.

With the amount of users here I'm sure there is someone out there who has had to replace their 1gr-fe 4.0 due to one reason or another. Tonight my 06 tacoma sh!t the bed while cruising home on the highway. I wasn't bashing or abusing the motor, just simply cruising along at 70mph when next thing I know it lost power and the motor died, with smoke billowing from under the hood. Upon seeing the smoke I could smell that it was burning oil. First observation was seeing a steady flow of oil coming from my skid plate. No obvious signs of block failure or even abnormal sounds like rod knock or crankshaft chatter prior to the engine giving out midstream, I did have the tunes up and my exhaust is on the loud side which probably masked the warning sounds of engine trouble. Giving the time of day, 10pm and pitch black out, I wasn't able to immediately centralize the problem or source of the oil leak but there's oil everywhere. I will do a thorough inspection in the daylight. I had to winch the truck onto the trailer.

I haven't checked the coolant or oil level, but obviously the oil level will probably not touch the dipstick. Thinking out loud I'm predicting the timing chain broke, which makes things worse since what ive read is that the 1grfe is an interference engine. Just an assumption as when I tried to restart the engine it really struggled to turn over, making me think that the valves where not opening/closing.

Currently trying to find a low mileage 05-11 1grfe.

My bets on something small happened if there were no odd noises or issues before it started burning / leaking oil.

I know the cam chain access cover has been known to leak as have valve cover gaskets especially on the early 05-06 tacos.

Get it in the daylight and figure out what happened.

Subd, I’ve got an 06 too, and have a timing cover leak that I still have to fix. It’s a slow leak but yours seem to be something else, or the leak got worse if you haven’t fixed the timing cover leak.

Curious to see what you end up doing.

If it didn't go BOOM (or less dramatically, snap, click, pop, etc.), then it was probably something fairly stupid that went wrong. Oil filter unscrewed, oil coolant line got rubbed through on something, etc. It doesn't, of course, mean that the engine wasn't destroyed, because running without oil will kill it. Oil pressure light come on?

The CPU is different on the FJ & T4R.
I know a couple folks that have replaced the 4.0.
Sucks the motor died - I just turned 190K on my 07.

If it was me I’d look to source another 4.0 from a Tacoma.

    They’re out there.

    Try: www.car-part.com.

Excellent source for used parts with a pretty good search feature.

I would stick with 05-11 model year because it is direct fit.
Hope you get your Taco back on the road soon .

Also while I was watching the oil flow from my skid plate, it had a strong smell of gas to it. Either the rings are toast, or I had a bad injector. I'll know more around 3:30 when I get off work. Approximately 5800 miles since the last oil change. Was going to change It this week.

Yes. Was running the 91 tune, I just flashed the 87 tune last week.
