Absolutely. It was refreshing to see so many people being courteous of each other, having mutual respect. They instill that in their population and good parenting. We are a mess here in the United States. It’s easy to get caught in the vicious cycle and be like everyone else. Time to step up and be the difference, one person at a time.

I recently test drove a used 2016 OR (with like 40k miles) and a 2019 OR (with 3 miles) and I will say they felt alot different to drive. The 2016 seemed to shift harder, kind of jerky and honestly didn't feel like it had full power. I chocked it up to being used VS new, but they definitely felt like they drove differently. The 2019 was alot smoother on the power and had better throttle response and smoother shifting. So I hear you on the test driving them.

That said I also drove 2 used 2018s and both of them felt a little different than one another or the other two. one was an OR and one was a Sport. so again I chocked it up to different models but honestly I think each truck seems to be kind of it's own thing. So test drive the one you want to buy, not just one of the same year/model... Drive the actual truck!

    So what's changed?
I'm seeing all part numbers the same except for minor stuff.
I hear illusions like this all the time with no evidence.
Get the flash updates. That's all.
    That's the diffetence.
My 16 with fox suspension rides better than any 18 I've been in.

Saying it is an illusion is completely ignorant.

If a 2016 and 2019 are sitting next to one another on the lot and the 2019 has all the TSBs done and has had all the ECU updates it is ABSOLUTELY going to drive different than the 2016 that has had none of the TSBs and updates, there is no "Illusion" there.

I miss driving in SoCal. To me it seemed like everyone had their head in the game, even if they were texting and driving, they were GOOD at it. SoCal is elite level drivers. I really took that for granted, because where I live now, it’s like they’re all crippled. Like...these people just fucking process shit way too slow. Must be in the water.

OP....I'll try to give some relevant input...
    1) Historically we have seen Toyota (and other manufacturers) do the minimum changes/updates needed to keep their vehicles competitive in class- example: 2005-2015 trucks with 2012-2015 considered a "larger" update...
    2) There are many models across a brand to keep up with CAFE and other update mandates - engineering costs, tooling, production, etc. are costly and are rarely undertaken on more than a couple models at a time.
    3) We are seeing a global trend toward emission and economy mandates that are forcing manufacturers to focus on making green,50mpg, vehicles within their offerings that offset the brand average to stay compliant...example: Hybrid shoebox as one offering full size diesel as another....averages are required to stay compliant, and as such, more time and investment must FIRST be focused on the models that have greater affect on that compliance.
    4) When a manufacturer does make investment across their offerings, couple models at a time, to gain improvement toward above compliances....that spend is allocated and until they sift through the rest of their offerings they likely will not revisit that same model until the other models have seen similar improvement.
    5) A manufacturer must then find small ways to keep that model "relevant" and "competitive" in its segment until the cycle starts all over again. Toyota has mastered this process IMO, IE: offer a Pro, keep it's color exclusive for a year, then offer color on other select models, next year mix it up. Throw black off road fender flares on SR and call it SX package. Manual on certain models only and change that from 2016-2019. Keep hood scoop only on pro and sport. They give a "new" reason to get some small special upgrade, or desired option, each year and mix it within model offerings. Recycle that within global distribution. One could almost argue that "complaints" are used to a manufacturers advantage....the 2016 did this, the 2019 fixed it, etc. Therefore encouraging people to purchase the "updated" vehicle.
    6) Only you can determine what best suites your needs and desires. Each person, based on position in life, will have different needs, and that will change for that same person throughout the years. Some people have a need to keep vehicles long term and mitigate vehicle expenses, others take comfort in always having a warranty. Others want simply the latest tech. Life is short, there is nothing wrong with any of these options. Be happy. Do you. Whatever that is. Whatever life dictates at that time.
    7) All of the above said, by historical data, unless the manufacturer is struggling with sales of a particular model, or, there are too many costly recalls and design flaws, they will not likely discontinue nor update the model until the mandates make the spend an absolute necessity. Further, by Toyota's track record on the Tacoma, one could speculate that any changes for 2020 will likely be very minor and/or simple changes within the various models.
8)Any new vehicle, even of same model, will vary....good ones vs the Friday at 4pm build...you pay your money and take your chances.
9)Model year values are based accordingly...newer=greater value. This can only be offset by significant purchase discounts of close out model years....you alone must determine what is significant enough to justify the spread.
    10) If there are things you feel are lacking on your current vehicle, and a new purchase is eminent, then insuring your new purchase satisfies the previous perceived deficiencies, is of greater importance than model year to your owner satisfaction. IE: if a vehicle satisfies all of an owners needs, wants, and desires on the majority of fronts, and keeps the owner happy...rarely, if ever, would said owner give a rats behind what model year the vehicle is.

Done: IMO, FWIW, YMMV, Outlaw out.

I will tell you what I know about the 2020 Tacoma from a reliable source.
He said, that they said, that you said that I forgot who said, that Bob the builder
is going to re design from ground up to compete against the Baby Ranger Rupture.

This is spot on. The only difference though is while the 2nd gen tacomas were out, they had virtually no competition other than the frontier and the ranger up until 2011.

Now with the gm twins, updated ridgeline, ranger coming, jeep pickup coming, updated frontier coming, and possible return of the dodge dakota they may have to keep things a little more updated depending on how sales go.

I don't expect the tacoma sales to take much of a hit, but the more competition, the better.

Same. Grew up in Chicago and was last stationed in Jersey. Those drivers are on point even if aggressive. Now stationed in Tucson and driving here is F-ing painful.

I heard from my friends sisters 2nd cousin that updated tacoma will have updated 4.5l i6 from the 80 series land cruiser with 300 hp 325 lb ft of torque mated to a 10 sp auto. 8000 lb towing and 2k payload all while getting 30 mpg.
