This is the best style wrench IMO as it's universal. They make two sizes so make sure you get the correct one. Or get both.

Yep, this is what I have. The cool thing about that one over other adjustable filter tools is that it has springs to keep it in place if you have to get another bite on the ratchet.

 

You know, you can go to a parts store and pick up your filter and test it on the various filter wrenches on the shelf. Rather than acting helpless.

 

If you need an oil filter wrench you’re tightening your filters too tight.

The tool mentioned in post #4 is the best - no question about it. Fits many different size spin on filters. If you want a cap-type tool for just about any filter, you can get one of these from Amazon or at your local Pep Boys.

Do a FIND for the specific filter part number.

I always hand tighten mine, but after it's been on 6 months, it's a bit snug. Comments about using a hand may work when you're young. Tool(s) help when you get older.

 

I second the hand. I put a filter on with a wrench. Once. That was an expensive learning experience.

 

Get the cap wrench.

Why would you put a filter ON with a wrench, the only filters I put on with a cap wrench are gmc/Chevy truck filters since they are tucked up in the oil pan and i lightly snug them, Wrenches are only suppose to be used for removal of filters.

 

I put them on by hand but I always need a wrench to get them off. I still use the wrench I got for my first gen Tacoma 18 years ago.

I like these but I've only used it a couple times.

Basically when I work on someone's car that has always been to the dealership or auto shop for oil changes. They must use impact wrenches or something. The only downside is it will crush the filter if it is ridiculously tight. It will still get it off though. One time I forgot it at someone's house and got desperate on a friend's Altima. That's right, I drilled a hole and stuck a screwdriver throught it to twist it off.
