Anyone have a good way to cook a wild turkey? Never done it before, shot my first one this past spring and want to cook it up this week. I have it dressed ready for roasting just like a store bought turkey.

I understand it's a much leaner meat. So putting some fatback on the skin? Beer can inside? Open to all suggestions.

Slow cooker is the only way you won't break your teeth on the legs. You can grill the breasts, but if you grill the legs they'll be like cured leather.

Not sure it'll fit in a crockpot... I'll check this evening though. Would I be better to not roast it as a whole and do the breast/legs separate?

I did just breast fillets in the crockpot and (skinless which I assume u either skinned the turkey or wished you would have after you got through plucking it) and they turned out great. You might could try just the leg quarters in the crockpot and grilling the breast if u wanted.

Didn't skin it. Had no knowledge you could. Like I said my first bird I ever shot. Very new to turkey hunting. Thanks! Might try that.

I am a very avid turkey hunter and my wife and I limit out every year. I have tried every way you can think of over the last 55 years and we just slice and tenderize the breast then batter and fry. Kinda like chicken tenders.

We are simple, just seasoned flour (spog) egg wash double dipped. Just like fried chicken. With gravy and fried tators /onions.

I've fried the first two turkeys I've harvested whole and turned out well, especially if you inject it first.
However, this year's bird I did what most days here and that's breast it, slice it and fry it. It was awesome

Injection and blackened seasoning rubbed are how my buddy and I do the store-bought birds. Accompanied by our favorite beverages, of course :drunk:

2 ingredients and several beers/drinks later, delicious tasting turkey!

Don't have a smoker (on my to do list to build one) and I've never fried one before. Wouldn't want to ruin my first wild bird. Guess I could try with a store bought one first.

Last turkey I shot I removed the breast and sliced it into tenders, a little oil in the skillet and fried it. It was good the next day reheated also.
