whats the options.. so far all I see is the ARB... is there an electric option? Eaton? i looked on their website, but they only list for the rear, same for detroit lockers(rear Only) (would prefer to have selectable in front)... and yes I am planning to carry a toolbox with spare CV's...

starting my overland build and I have selected some parts to buy in stages, but one of the biggest is the front locker, and there seems to be a limitation of going with ARB only.. and I dont want an air locker, and its associated air compressor.. I live in the north and just feel it would be a wasted expense for a wimpy compressor that could barely fill tires..

If you get the dual arb air compressor. One side runs the locker and the other side will fill a size 40 tire in about 5 to 10 minutes. Also can run air tools if needed. The air locker is the best option, but you can contact east coast gear supply and ask.

You could run one of those viair systems that have a small tank you can mount under the bed. Some of those kits would probably run air tools.

you don't even have to get the duel compressor. I have the medium compressor and it fills my 35's from 15 to 32 psi in about 2 1/2 to 3 mins

I can't speak from experience, but wouldn't a front locker make it almost impossible to turn?

You have a greater risk of killing cv joint. Usually in the case of needing a front locker your not turning as much as just trying to get out of or over something.

it can to an extent.. was more of an issue with U-joint shafts.. cv's allow more flexibility.. but it definitly makes it harder to turn, but they can be invaluable to have a locker on the front end for steep slippery climbs..

Harrop makes an e-locker for the front clamshell, I think.

Another thing I’d carry are spare tire rods. Pretty cheap, pack small and can be a real ball buster if you break it and don’t have a spare.

I have a front ARB, do it.

also you won't break CVs as easily as everyone says, don't bounce and don't turn to wheel lock when using it.

you can turn the wheels with it activated, but just be smart about it.

Harrop makes a solid locker but you will pay for it, I think it's like $1400 not including install.

Just my 0.02 but overlanding can mean many things, lately it seems to be a buzzword for charging people premium on parts but where I'm really going is, do you really need a front locker for overlanding since you already have a rear locker?

I can't think of any places other than dedicated rock crawling trails where a front and rear locker are needed. Considering most go with a 33" tire you are limited in ground clearance as well. Thats a lot of money that can go towards other mods.

It's your money obviously but having taken a lot of consideration to the front locker as well, I opted not to get it.

I also run a twin compressor but if I had to choose between ARB and Harrop I would go Harrop

1 read too many ARB horror stories, and am not a fan of them.. yes I know properly setup.. blah blah blah... but this is my build so hold your tongue...
2 airing up a set of tires should take no longer than 6 or so minutes.. already planning to get a CO2 tank to refill after air down...
3 ARB/VIAIR air compressors dont have a great reliability record especially for an engine bay mounted compressor ( I live in midcoast maine.. temps vary from -20*F, and 100+*) and the seals on the compressors are known to fail.. not something I want when on the trails...
4 overlanding is a thing... I am not building a dedicated wheeler (I own a 1974 CJ-5 with a 360 V-8, 32" mud kings and a lot of other mods.. it is not meant for cross country travel... the tacoma however will be my daily driver, and the build will be a tasteful set of mods to get me to work and back (I dont get snowdays, EVER (law enforcement)), i rescue my coworkers, and strangers all the time that fall victim to the roads, weather, etc.. I am going for lightweight, and durable. I intend to take this truck across country to see the sights, and experience this country and areas I never have.

keep your nasty comments to yourself.

There isn't and as far as I know there is no LSD either. So you get ARB or Harrop
