Ummmm... What were they protesting??? Also, you can't disrespected the law and expect them to sit there and do nothing.

police don't get paid enough to deal with that kind of shit. when you start screaming obcenities (sp) and pushing back....it's not longer a "peaceful protest".

I can see your point and I agree, but put yourself in the protester's shoes.

Here you are protesting PEACEFULLY and cursing obscenities (sp?) with EVERY right to curse. The riot police march towards you, you start to back up until you are backed up against the other wall of riot police. You can no longer leave. Are you going to stand there with your hands by your side or are you going to put your hands up to protect yourself? Not fight back, just protect yourself. I'm sure the guy knew he wasn't going to do ANYthing to the officer. He was just bracing himself.

But then again, that's what you get for sitting in the middle of the street.:D:p

I agree, i just have to think that they, or someone in another one of their protest groups on the other side of the street did something to merrit that kind of response from the officers. I just don't think we can get all of the info from that video. it was shot by one of the protesters, so if there was something in it that showed them giving the officers reason to do what they did, there would be no reason to post a video of yourself in the wrong. the beggining of the video could have been cut out where they did something that coused the ofecers to initially form the large circle around them. not saying the officers are in the clear... we'll just never have the full story.

Actually..... at the beginning of the video posted on here, there is a link on the video itself to a shorter video of the "rooftop angle". You can see everything from that shot.

huh, didn't see that the first go-round. thanks for pointing that out. that's a great vantage point to see everything. but it looks like it actually begins later than the initial video. you can see that before they started to move in on the small crowd, they were in a large circle. i'm guessing something happened before the filming began that caused the need for a perimiter. jsut a gues though as i'm not a police officer and don't knwo what protocal is in riot and/or protest situations

they were actually held there just like that into the night while it rained. a few "innocent" people were released but the rest were eventually arrested, taken the a detention/holding center. a lot of those arrested were released on monday with no charges laid.
are you guys forgetting that as Canadian citizens we have the right to peaceful assemble. the bill of rights and freedoms does not stipulate you cannot assemble in the street

your right, there must have been something to cause the reaction. but what could it have been? we could speculate all day. no matter what it was, bullying and holding a group of people like that for the amout of time is not the right thing to do. could you imagine getting caught up in something like that? that would be fuckin terrifying.

cops using terror tactics? say it ain't so!

yeah, we can go back and forth with guesses all day. it does suck that people were held like that, and i wouldn't want to be in their shoes, then again, i don't go to protests, so i won't. in situations liek this, i think the only fair way to look at it is that both parties could have handled things better. i just hope no one was seriously injured.

i just think the police have the obligation to act properly. not that individuals should not be held acountable for their actions because they most certainly should

Whoever told you that you have every right to curse is incorrect and needs to review Section 175 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

I've reviewed the video. At about 1:20 they start to advance and at 1:29 I can hear get back/move or you will be arrested. Think I should point out these people had sat down in the middle of what looks to be a rather large intersection... Psst, read above 175(a)(iii) and (c).

Approaching the 2:00 mark you hear someone who has been standing stationary asking something along the lines of "what are we supposed to do?" Uhh, move? You've been told for the last 40 seconds or so. At this point look down at the cops feet when the camera shifts down. They're not exactly moving forward at a fast pace giving people more than enough time to move. As for the strike with the shield... It's how they're trained to move people when they don't move when told to do so.

3:00 - "For your safety GO HOME"... Pretty self-explanatory.

4:13 - "You're kidding me. This is my brother" ... Sweetie, that doesn't mean shit. Go home.

Sort of boring up until 8:09 where someone is removed from the group. Pretty planned out from a tactical point of view. The only reason a group would be surrounded like this is if they were identified as being some sort of issue and needed to be arrested.

9:39 - More people are removed from the group and it's fairly evident there's a level of resistance going on here... and the video ends shortly after that.

I totally agree with what others have said about not knowing what happened before that caused this reaction from the Police, but I think a reasonable person (that's Law-anese) would believe if Police surrounded a group with such presence, it was for a reason.

I know some wont like how I personally view this video, but it's my opinion and right just like it was theirs to protest. Where protesters go wrong is thinking they're immune from laws when protesting and while they like to "think" they know the laws, they don't read past "Hey! You're allowed to protest!". If the cops show up and are asking you to move, take that as a sign that you've made your point, and move along. Protesting doesn't mean an endless shit show where you disrupt everything and destroy property as you see fit to get your message out.

    Just my .02
