no no no, just a single toybox would be sufficient for anything I would ever do.. but I'll drive the truck for a few years, and do some other mods before that ever comes to my doorstep.

I was looking to do dual OX lockers in my CJ-5.. have a set of Scoutt II D44's sitting in my garage waiting for a rebuild.. just need gears, and the lockers..

I bought the truck so I would have something useful to haul stuff around, and to replace my aging car that bent a valve.

So what is the great North? I am in in Northern AB and have yet to have a plastic air line fail unless it was routed poorly and not secured in placed. Used the air locker numerous times in the winter to get out of some snotty crap, although it didn't really help. but yes it is a weak point. I am also debating getting a front locker, I can get by without it, but it would be nice to have for some of the areas i have been in. My job site along i have use my rear locker more then out on the trail. some slimey wet fat clay. ugh. Makes cleaning the truck a priority or it sets up like concrete.

just a question, but how does the ECU deal with re-gearing/tire size changes? I assume I have to reprogram the gear/tire ratio for speedo correction..

Like I said go watch those 4wd action videos and see what Graham does open diff and then say you need a locker or crawl box . Given you started this with Overlanding I'm going to say you are no where near heading to the terrain you need either .
When I first got the truck I thought the same. And I've put it through more rock terrain than any Overland will encounter and I don't need a front locker
Although it wouldn't hurt if I want to go for even harder trails but even then not 100% needed

There's a calibration you do for your speedo to be accurate that's all

midcoast Maine, fishing industry, forrestry/logging up north of me.. lots of trails, and nasty mud/clay, and whatnot.. the lockers definitly help the winch when crawling out of a deep mudhole that has you up to the diffs... not soo much for going through them (momentum/wheelspin).... I tend to not give enough skinny pedal and get stuck.. thus the searching for a front locker.. if you go further north you run into canada.. and they have this wonderful stuff called muskeag... I steer hell clear of that stuff.... you can loose your rig completely..

lockers and lots of speed almost always equal destruction. They are not something that should be used with speed, more so to replace speed and do slow and controlled like with rock.

and unless you're doing front bumper there is no rocks you can climb that would warrant a front locker cause the front approach angle is such shit on these trucks.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUieyOjn7tw

Thats all open diff in the Dmax

and this is one of the easier trails I do with the truck here in Ontario.

Not trying to be a dick but the hostility you got is because this post is usually what follows the 'what size lift to fit 33 KO2s' that new members that just watched expedition overland and suddenly think they need one of those overbuilt rigs to 'overland'

the only thing hard about the shit XO does is the isolated factor the rest they are just dirt roads and a bunch over hyped shit. too much theatrics nothing more.

save your money from a locker and do a decent lift and mud tires and maybe a winch to get you out when bogged. will go a lot further than a front locker and you wont be breaking the front diff or CVs constantly
when front is locked you can't really turn and doing so puts so much stress on CVs

Harrops e-lockers are $200 off now at cruiserbrothers. It's posted on the black friday sale post.

I'm thinking of getting an ARB front locker only because I'll be regearing soon. I figure might as well throw it in after going through all that just in case I ever decide I need it.

I installed a Harrop in the front and kept the OEM rear E-locker when I did my regear, while I have OBA, I did not want the troubles I have seen others have with air lockers.

I posted as I did the research, and only found 3 options... stay open diff, ARB, or an overpriced Ected locker.. I didnt know if someone knew of another option I couldnt find.. I then was not told " those are the only options", but then ridiculed for looking into it. not to mention I couldnt find any videos, or posts about rebuilding the clamshell diff.. that part is a mystery to me still.. I appreciate the advice, but could do without the BS. not saying speed is the answer, especially on off camber stuff.. I realize most trails can be passed with an open diff, careful tire placement, and a good winch.. just trying to weigh my options. Lockers were always something i wanted on my jeep (had a spool rear)..

Concerning the use of the front, it is one of those last ditch kind of things and with proper use they are fine, also part of the reason I will not upgrade axles is I would prefer those to fail than the front diff and an axle change in the field is more than doable.

Honestly I agree and would go E locker if i do my front as well.
The one plus side to the ARB though is it has a better bearing in it so you wouldn't need to do that ECGS needle bearing replacement.

I had the front and rear ARB on my TJ and had no issues.
BUT I have heard the same issues with air lockers. I know my buddy that has them on his taco was told make sure his breather is never blocked otherwise he could blow out his axle seals when locked if the added preasure doesnt have somewhere to vent.

There's pros and cons to both E locker and ARB

Eaton I would assume makes a front locker as well but you may as well buy the harrop as it uses eaton parts.
Regardless its a steep price and there's other mods that would likely go further and be better to do first. Then if after them you still find the need maybe do it.

But no point doing front locker before lift, tires and I'd think probably a winch and bumper. Because that locker will bring you places you might be more likely to get stuck and when the locker cant get you out you'll want a winch to do so lol.
I'm doing winch and ARB bumper come spring first, as I mentioned about the approach angle has actually been whats limiting me on what the truck can do as I can't get my front wheels on the rocks where I might even need a front locker without smashing my front end right now.

i've heard thats one of the main issues with RCV front CVs, they're so strong the diff becomes the weak point. Its easier and cheaper to replace a CV than a diff in the field.

thats exactly what I said pages ago... my first mod is a tonneau cover, and hood mount ditch lights (https://caliraisedled.com/collectio...ducts/2016-toyota-tacoma-ditch-light-brackets). actually going to order the mounts, lights and switches on wednesday (pay day). the tonneau cover will probably be a christmas present to myself.. then this spring I plan to save up for a CBI T3 aluminum front bumper with the mid protection bar, and a smittybuilt 10000k winch.. with synthetic line..

the cali raised lights leak from what I've heard, and seen. just throwing it out there.

be careful with what you read on here though. Before you know it you'll fall down the rabbit hole and be approaching 20k into the rig and still want more...ask me how I know lol
