I might be the only one that doesn't give a crap about diesels. IMO a lot of people wax poetic about what they use to be. All I see is a nightmare trying to keep any after treatment system in good shape so it doesn't blow the rest of the engine up.

Complaining about guns, and gas prices?!?!?!? Move to Texas, which is oil friendly, and gun friendly.

I've always been a function over form guy. The Hilux is built more stout than the Tacoma (example: fully boxed frame). Plus you don't see the weak torque-less 3.5 in any Hilux model. The Tacoma's drivetrain doesn't live up to how it looks.

What year is your 3rd gen? I think the diesel would have certain driveability benefits in town and maybe for dealing with the super high double OD, but the emissions crap would kill any benefits IMO. Taking 15 seconds to get to 60 would be a bummer too.
When it comes to frame issues with my Tacoma, or any Tacoma ever made, boxed or not is not something I think about. Actually, other than rust, I can say I never think about the frame.

The front facia of the Hilux looks like it would cost you a billion dollars to fix after even light off-roading. Those ‘canards’ by the fog lights look like they would scrape off on the 1st pine cone.

The “boxed frame” argument is old and irrelevant. Frame flex is part of vehicle design, and arguably, the worlds most robust off-roader, the Unimog, has an open ladder frame, with a boxed front, exactly like the Tacoma, as seen below from the Mercedes website.

The Australians I know, do not like the new Hilux, and wish they could buy Tacomas.

The Tacoma driving experience has proven controversial, but the engine and transmission options are bulletproof so far. Just think for a minute of the number of newbies just getting into 4WD with its present popularity. A lot of them are heading out in new 3rd gens, and how many non-recall (TPS / diff gasket) problems do we see here? Almost none. Even after several years. People are thumping on new Tacos and they have proven up to the task. You may not like the 3.5 driving characteristics, but it’s a been a reliable plant so far.

Hey, I’m not saying there isn’t other trucks in the world I wish I could purchase, but that butt-ugly plastic Hilux sure ain’t one of them.

My two bits.....disagreement is always welcome!

Would you take this Offroad? I thought Toyota was pushing it with the front end on the new Taco, but this is ridiculous.
