Sorry man, that's not a tall tale. It was my colleague and it was on a brand new Ridgeline several years ago. We are both engineers and both very experienced in Tribology as we use that knowledge in our jobs. He basically bought a new Honda Ridgeline, changed the filter every 10K miles and refilled what oil he lost during the change. He put 100K on it, traded it in and informed them of what he did.
I wouldn't do it because it's not necessary but he did with no issues.

FWIW i let the dealer change it every 10K miles with OEM oil and filter.

What oil is specified from the OEM engineers is determined by application and engine spec.

Is there a better oil out there than what the Toyota engineers determined? Maybe, but I doubt any weekend warrior can determine that based on marketing blurbs or what their sister's cousin's dad used.

If you want an official answer, then IMO, any 0W-20 will be fine and none are better or worse. Find the cheapest and move on and change it every 10K like the engineers spec.. Now, if you tow 5K every day or are prerunning the BAJA then change it more frequently. My .02.

Exactly, any 0w-20 is going to be fine and differences will probably be minimal. I decided to send an oil sample to Blackstone and they recommended that I go with a 7,000 mile OCI.

    Two kids.
I used Amsoil & Royal Purple in my Mini when I tracked it. Both worked great. I used Mobile 1 in my GTI because it never saw the track. My truck has been serviced by the dealer until this upcoming oil change. I haven't decided what to use yet.

Amsoil is an absolute joke. While it won't hurt anything, it is nothing special and nothing more than a pyramid scheme. Multi level marketing at it's finest. No different than Amway, Herbalife, or Mary Kay.

It won't hurt it. These trucks will go 300k miles with regular non-synthetic oil and you rarely hear of problems like spun bearings, knocking or low compression which might be contributed to the oil.

After reading a thread on this site about Amsoil used in the diffs this is definitely what I'll be doing. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/is-there-a-better-transfer-case-oil-than-oem.470568/
I bought a case of Mobil 1 at Costco for $26 for my upcoming oil change.
Edit: There's a link in that thread somewhere that shows the testing.

Mobil 1 usually gives rebates at least once a year. They have a list of participating retailers and you will not see WalMart on it, but if you buy there you will get your rebate. I've been doing it for years. You get a $12 rebate on each gallon jug. Limit is two jugs. Seventeen dollars if you buy the M 1 filter also.
You can probably just google Mobil 1 rebate and get the web site. I got it from the CorvetteForum. Someone is always posting something when the rebate comes around. Tacoma guys are easy compared to some of the Vette guys, as far as being anal about their cars. I own a modded 08 Z06.
Go to Wally World, or where ever you can get the best price, and follow the simple instructions.
As far as what oil to use. I personally think that any major brand, full synthetic oil is fine. What ever you can get on sale. Since M 1 is always on sale....I use Mobil 1. I probably have 10 jugs of it bought up. At first, I had a friend buy a couple of jugs for me, also.

My wife bought a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 before we were married. It got 5000 mile oil changes with regular old Castrol 5W-30 brand of dead dinosaurs.... That truck had 251,000 miles on it when we sold it. Engine ran fine, I still see it around town.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Save your money for better things. I've used it, and it didn't do any measurable difference in my engine than Mobil 1, Pennzoil, or Castrol synthetics have. All had used oil analyses done, mind you, by a third party company that's not affiliated by any oil company. All these "tests" you see online that puts Amsoil (or any other oil brand, for that matter) are sponsored by that affiliated company so aren't very legit. Of course Amsoil will make sure that their Signature Series beats everything else out in all but maybe one of the tests! :p
My problem with Amsoil is availability, when I can go into Walmart any day of the week and buy Mobil 1 for $22 for a 5 quart jug it's pretty much a no brainer. Also, what if you're out on the road and need to add oil to your crankcase? Guarantee you won't find Amsoil stocked at a 7/11 or Pilot truck stop!
Another big issue with the Signature Series, at least, is it's not API certified. That instantly voids your power train warranty if the dealership finds out you're running a non-API certified oil in your truck. It's stupid because the lower grades of Amsoil, OE and XL all have the certification, but they won't bother certifying their flagship line of oil! Which if you're going to buy Amsoil, you might as well get Signature Series is the way I see it.
I don't doubt Amsoil's good oil, but the hassle and time invested into obtaining it is ridiculous and unnecessary, you're basically paying for a name more than anything else. Mobil 1, Pennzoil and Castrol are all very high quality and will get you to 300k miles or more no problem for a fraction of the cost and hassle. Even house brand synthetics like Super Tech, O'Reilly and Napa brand are great choices if you're on a budget. There's no real "bad" quality oil in this day and age.

Oil is like beer.....lots of opinions!

Probably very little difference at the molecular level on modern synthetics so it comes down to preference really. I run Amsoil in my motorcycle, so I also ran it in my S2000 when I had it. I also used Mobil 1 and Royal Purple before and they were also very good. Used Mobil 1 exclusively in my old DD and when I traded it in, it was spotless with 145k on it. It's good stuff as well.

Probably the reason I stick to Amsoil is mostly habitual and also convenience, I can order it online and its delivered like a day later. Plus, I also use their fuel stabilizers, and rust proofing spray and I don't need to leave the couch to get it. :)

< Mobil 1 synthetic here too. But I usually change it around 6k miles or a little past that. I've always found it the best price at walmart.
I tried ordering it once online and my bottle was leaking all over the U.S. postal truck. My mailman dropped it off in a black plastic bag at my porch. Took it back to store to exchange it....ugh

Another vote for Mobil1 synthetic. I have used it on my last 4 cars. No engine issues and happy with its performance.
Just did 1st oil change on my Tacoma yesterday @ 1550 miles. From now onwards I will probably do it every ~4K miles.
