Going from my 07 4.0 to an 18, I knew it felt underpowered so I ordered my OVTune within about a week of buying my truck. It was definitely a dramatic difference. That said, for the money, I'd first look at getting the FREE TSB done to see if that works for you. If not, then drop the cash and go OVTune for a solid ride.

For those auto guys who are wondering why your transmission seems to be bi-polar at times - read this, from the man himself (Mat Wilson):

So.. here is what is interesting, and what I was incorrect about when I first started learning how the transmission works...

The shifts are controlled by accelerator angle / requested torque > axle speed > axle speed limit per gear > Table selection > Table selection basis on torque request closest match > Engine Temp (hot, cold) > Gear selected > Transmission Torque value selected > shift (any direction)

This is why the transmission shifts all over the place. Because it does not designate specifically an up or down routine. It only designates limits based on xyz variables.

Here is what will boggle your mind and what we were wrong about in the beginning... The tables do not designate the transmission going up or down. The tables only designate the limit of how a gear can be used.
It's not even that easy to explain.

    it's a mess.

This is why 1.05 is taking so long. Now that we understand every critical detail of how the transmission is being used we are rewriting our entire tune (transmission side) to make proper use of this.

Just another reason I'm glad I own a manual!

More from Mat (Auto trans stuff):

yes exactly. It's definitely a *new* way of doing things. and has made it that much more difficult to tune (before).
When you think about it, it is actually a really smart way giving the transmission a high degree of "shifting freedom"... basically saying "lets determine the limits only, and let the ECU calculate everything else). Therefore, you the driver will never, ever be in control of the transmission completely. Your accelerator pedal (right foot) only determines 1 piece of the equation to tell the transmission what to do.

    Like this : Shift = A + B + C + 1(D * F) (and your foot is F).. A, B, C, D is completely under the ECUs control.

Thinking about it is really funny.. you floor it expecting 3rd gear and the ECU says hmm no lets go to 5600 RPM in second and shift 0.5 seconds later. Why, because it's Within the limit boundary. hah

Reality is though the transmission goes completely insane.

Best news I can give you is when I tested out disabling all other tables the transmission acted exactly like transmissions did 10 years ago. It would always shift at the predetermined points (axle speed) based on throttle angle. Every time.
Now, we can create a shift curve so that it shifts at a rising curve based on accel angle... and it will use ONE! Table to determine transmission output torque.

I'll have a video of it soon.

The transmission didn't feel loose and sloppy.

If i didn't already have it, i'd wait until the 1.05 update actually releases. The TSB fixes 80% of the problems.

I've read more than half of the OVTune thread and its a dumpster fire of people whining for the next version or asking questions about the turbos in the wrong thread these days. You're not missing anything OP. We can't all be internet rockstars like here4cake.

As far as advice, I'd have your local dealer do the TSB for free, and if you dont like the change, try the tune.

Hey @Shellshock, you better be careful. With all the miles you pile on that truck, you're bound to have holy pistons any time now.

This is essentially what the shift sense pro v2 does. And it works well, but it doesn't do anything for the lack of torque from the engine. That's where OVTune will be great if they get everything dialed in.

Holy shit thanks for the warning! I better go talk to the dealer to make sure they’ll cover it!

Stock tune sucks. TSB is better. OVT is miles better. I’ve logged over 40,000 miles on various tunes from OV and I have zero concerns about negative long term impact on the truck - it’s run better than it EVER has from the factory. If you don’t want to run it or want some bandaid like SSP or sprint booster - have at it, it’s your money but know you are missing out on a real fix.

Lot of people out there spreading F.U.D. A tune is where you draw the line but chopping up your truck, lifting 3 inches, adding huge tires and adding 600 lbs of armor is no big deal. o_O
