Ha that sucks. Snow can be an unpredictable bitch as I learned on that trip.

Yeah that spot the tree thankfully saved me. In the other spot, I had NOTHING to keep me from sliding in, ran a snatch block to a tree, to the slider/rear bumper to get me through and then dug out the trail/rebuilt the wash out for the third gen behind me. Now I know to do that from the start to not get into that position in the first place.

Goddamnit, I always forget about that.

I went wheeling for the first time 2 weeks ago. Now my drivers side slider is requiring me to notch out my pinch weld, and my leaf springs are back to squeaking. Not as bad this time though, if it doesnt get any worse I'll just live with it. And it sounds like I have some lose panel clips on the inside. Gonna be a fun thanksgiving break between fixing noises in my truck, and doing a valve cover gasket on my sister car.

Yup, safety flags so you can be seen when you’re coming over a sand dune.

It’s pretty far South. It’s about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Most of the guys who ran with us were from SoCal and drove about the same amount of hours that I did from San Francisco. Roughly four hours from SF sand LA.

Pretty sure it’s on top of the transmission. Take off your shifter from the cab and you’ll see it.

FYI if your signature is correct and you have a 4x4, then you’d have the 3RZ-FE 2.7l not the 2.4l. That was only found on the 5-Lug RWD.

What size tires is he running? I've got 255/75/17's on mine now and they don't rub at all, my previous set were 285/70/17's and they did rub.

Flares or no flares? Trying to decide if I should put the one back on now that the snorkel is functional or take the rest off...didn't think I'd like the flare-less look but I'm starting to think that maybe I do.

I think I just like it because it's different lol. I would definitely keep them to put back on later, if I do take them off. Those clips are a pain in the ass though

I’ve enjoyed reading the Pismo posts and couldn’t resist chiming in especially since @Wulf tagged me on one awhile ago. I was there the weekend after labor day for the first time. Drove the ~17 hours from Denver to meet up with my friends from LA area who have been going every fall for the last 20 years. My first experience was at night. Smelled my burning clutch while getting used to driving in the sand and quickly learned not to ride it so much. They took me to Independence Hill, east of sand highway marker 21. I watched my friend’s 90hp Barbie jeep climb 3/4 of the way up the dune, then roll back down. Another jeep and a Chevy Yukon had the same result. When it was my turn, in 4-Hi I hit 4600 RPM to get max horsepower from the 5VZ-FE and climbed to the dune’s top with plenty of momentum to spare. It was a proud Toyota moment.
I perfomed a couple of test flights the next day:

I don't even bother trying to save the clips everytime I take my flares off to get painted. I just buy new ones. They even make aftermarkets clips now so they're even less expensive.

Actually maybe I just like the black around the wheel wells.

And The mud that was thrown with no flares was absolutely terrible.

    Even with 10.50's

Ya I can see why mud would be an issue, your wheels stick out way further past the flares even than mine do...mine are flush with the flares maybe even pulled in a little.

I think the flares look good on silver...but something about the red minus the flares looks good to me, can't really explain it. Might just be that it's different and I'd end up putting them back on after awhile.

Since one is already off I say go for it and see how you like it. Besides the holes that are left when the flares are removed, I've always liked the flare-less look. It seems to break up the wheel and body a bit better on your truck too since you're running black wheels.
