Was interesting read. When you mentioned timing rattle first thing that came to mind was low oil. Haven't seen the dreaded timing chain rattle since dealing with old 22R engines in the old pickups.

If the rattle persists after the clean oil and filter go on, check the oil pickup tube for debris/clogging

The timing noise upon start up is common on these motors. Its not negligence. I have 355k miles on mine. At 155k it made this noise especially been sitting for an extended period of time. Some say its the timing components. At 355k I rarely hear it now. I do have a head gasket leak tho

These images are from you removing the cover or after changing your chain?

old thread, but never seen a correct explanation so could not help myself.

The chain tensioner uses oil pressure, an internal spring and a ratcheting stop to keep chain tension. The ratchet sets a max pushback for the passenger side guide, over time with plastic guide surface wear and chain stretch it will ratchet further out to take up the slack. The internal spring always keeps the guide against chain but only applies moderate pressure. The tensioner unit bolts to the engine and sits on top of an oil passage so when running oil pressure pushes harder on the plunger keeping more pressure on the chain for higher RPM.

If the truck has been sitting awhile you may hear chain clatter at startup before oil pressure builds.

Spot on....to that point, when I had rebuilty front end and had not started my truck for 6 months I actually unplugged my crank position sensor and used the started motor to "run" the engine until the oil pressure light went out. Then I plugged it back in and started it. Did this just so my trucks top end wouldn't be completely dry when it gets the heat from the first start up.
