Glass shifter knob

So I have a friend who blows glass. And I came up with the idea that I want him to blow me a glass shifter knob. I just need to get a solid cylinder machined to match the threads of the Tacoma. What is the size of the threads for a shifter knob and how "deep" do you think it should go? I provide pictures once it's done. And let me know if you guys like it. He may want to make more. Thanks

take the shift knob to lowes and try a few different bolts to see what size it is

 

If no one chimes in with it sooner, i can try and measure it for you in a little while....

I don't know what the threads are. I would think you would want to go 1/2 way into whatever glass piece you're doing though. You could machine the Toyota emblum (or whatever) onto the top of that cylinder? Maybe the glass would magnify it? That would be kind of neat.

 

Search tells me 8mm x 1.25.

 

Its 12mm X 1.25 i just replaced mine not too long ago.

 

I think the 5-spd is a different thread pattern than the auto.

 

from what i have read on other threads, the auto is 8mm x 1.25 and the other is 12mm x 1.25

Hmmm cool idea. I don't think it'd work to well out in AZ though, probably burn your hand when you went to grab it in the summer lol...

 

It would be better than a stainless steel or brushed aluminum knob though....

 

If this works I would definately order one. I hate the stock shifter and all the aftermarket ones just are not my style

 

Can't argue that one at all I had some brushed aluminum on my G (bulk was wrapped in fake CF plastic crap). It would burn but the fake crap was grab-able at least. Also, it was on the car when I got it so... yea lol.

 

I had a stainless on my old prelude, ended up just leaving a styrofoam cup or sock in the car to cover it when it was parked, worked wonders

 

That's such a simple yet ingenious idea... can't believe it never crossed my mind lol.

 

Yeah I had a MOMO metal shift knob in my previous car, and it was damn cold in the winter and smoking hot in the summer.

The only warning I would give though is that glass can act as a magnifying glass and can burn holes in things, I have a pretty bad burn in an antique piece of furniture from a blown glass paperweight
