The chip in key allows to start vehicle. A key with no chip can still start vehicle if you know the sequence. I lost chip key for a new Honda I had while out of town. I owned the car. I also had dealer repair catalog I bought from dealer when I bought car and discovered that if you pull e break or pushed break peddle in a sequence it would allow computer to start car with a 3dollar ACE Hardware key I kept hidden under car.

Thanks this is more info for me to think about. The issue is, there’s no “chip” that starts the truck.

I just bought a generic key had it cut and it opens my doors and starts the truck without the “alarm” going off.

That’s the fuckery I think that’s going on

Have not experienced (tested) this in the tacoma, but have a subaru that behaves identically to this.

Techstream should do it for you, you will need a dongle. I know it works for the keyless entry.
Or maybe you are near somebody who has a copy already to try. (Treasure space coast here if you are nearby)

Smart of you to have had that key made. Did the same for all my vehicles I've bought because of those over priced chip keys

Doood! I'm a bit envious. But then, if I did that here, I'd be homeless. No one has pools.

I used to like taking care of the pool, filter, and such growing up.

There's no fancy word for flying a desk. . .

I should have said it works with keyless entry trucks. I assume it works with H key, but haven't tested.

Techstream is available online if you look around here on TW. Dongle is available on ebay or Amazon $30-$50 or so.
(Or ovtune flashing dongle works too, still needs techstream)

If you got a dumb key with no chip, your dead in the water. If it has a chip, techstream should program it...

    funny story.

this happened to some folks on my last car forum, and a couple of those guys were local, so i referred them to my independent tech. he's a long time VW guy but just an independent tech who dislikes dealerships and buys most of the proprietary tools himself so he can do this kind of thing. VW dealers were wanting something like $700-800 for a new reprogrammed key. i sent a couple guys to him and he did it OTD under $150 including the actual key. can you find this guy for Toyota? does he exist?

Yes it’s a key with the H chip in my first post. The only thing it doesn’t do is remotely unlock the truck, which I really don’t care because I can use the key to manually unlock it.

But, it brings me back to question whether I even have an alarm?

I THINK we have a passive alarm, like you appear to have encountered.

I’ve called around and there’s a shop in NY that will program the new key, they quoted $75 if it works, $25 if it doesn’t.

So, worst case is $25 to find out it doesn’t work. I’ve already spent $20 on a piece of shit Chinese programmer that doesn’t work.
