How many lbs do you put in your bed for winter driving?

Zero and I live in Maine just came home to 8" of unplowed snow in my 1600' drive that climbs a hundred feet at the base buy good SNOW tires!

 

A little something in the bed does help when the roads are mostly clear but there are still some slick spots, especially pulling out of parking lots and side streets.

Not sure if it's worth the hassle of moving sand bags when you need the bed or the hit on gas mileage dragging the extra weight. I think I'm gonna roll no sand this year.

 

none, outside of the gear I carry all the time(axe/shovel/hi-lift/bedcover)

 

Mine is a DC with a cap on it. No additional weight needed.

I just shovel snow into bed while cleaning sidewalk. Provides adequate weight, reduces snow piles around walk and driveway and goes away on it's own when no longer needed.

 

None, but I do have a cap currently. I have never added weight for the purpose of traction, Never needed it either. Yes adding weight will help get better traction, but so will a properly equipped vehicle. As long as I had decent tires and a brain I have never had any issue in the snow. I have no desire to give up bed space or mpg's for a uneeded thing.

 

Hmm. No weight here on my last Silverado, current work Frontier, or new Tacoma. They all run dedicated General winter tires though so that's where the magic happens. Glued to the ground pretty well. People with ATs and all seasons always look at me crazy when I pass them! I will say though, a lighter AWD car with really good studded snows is so fun. Can really drive it hard.

 

Four 70lb sandbags in bed over axle. 2X4 frame on either side to prohibit shifting. Had to have this for my 01 Taco OR. Have yet to determine if needed on our new 18 Sport. We live on a big hill, going down in the morning before the plows can be treacherous.

 

You will... the ass end on these new tacomas can be kinda squirrelly in the snow ( on stock tires ). At least in mine it is anyway

 

LOL, had the Bridgestone tires swapped to Michelin when I picked it up at the dealer, salesman, a young lad was totally amazed that I would swap out tires on a new vehicle before driving it. Guess experience comes with age.

 

I would do the same... but I whiped out my savings when I purchased this truck. Own it outright... still haven't decided if that was a smart move yet...

3 70lb tubes of sand. Plus now the weight of my bed rack.

 

none.. thats what 4wd is for.

 

Everyone has a first time putting a 4x4 truck on its roof... I have seen many vehicles in the ditch on the side of the road because they were Ill prepared for a mountain pass in the winter. And everyone believes that they are good drivers... until they are upside down. It only takes a few hours to rig up weight for the light rear end. Better to do and not need, than be upside down in the ditch with god forbid a lost family member.

Pickup trucks are inherently light in the back end. They do not handle like automobiles. Yup, "everyone believes that they are good drivers". been there done that and have the T-shirt to prove it. YMMV

 

I just went snow wheeling in mine 8" wet snow and hard packed under that. Used 4 high and it just went, little to no slip. Even in the steep banked turns where most slide into the runoff ditch from the trail. Falken wildpeaks ftw. I've been impressed with these and the 4x4 system that Yota uses, just goes. Oh yeah no weight in the back outside of the factory tonneau

 

The irony in this issue is that most vehicles involved in fatal accidents in the snow are 4wds... it's not a magic switch. It helps... but when you believe it's all in your skill and your 4wd you end up overconfident and can get yourself or others injured or killed...
