I brought my truck in with about six thousand miles for the howl.

The dealer diagnosed the problem as a bad pinion bearing. Toyota said replace it.

Unfortunately the second diff was louder right off and the service manager basically told my I was SOL because the noise was now considered normal. Apparently not a pinion bearing anymore. And that I could test drive another truck on the lot and see for myself. I told them to keep my case open because the noise was not repaired.

So I contacted corporate and started a case with them or continues the case directly with them. I got an email monthly saying there wasn’t a fix, until there was and the TSB was issued.

I took it back to the dealer and complained about the howl. They did a full diagnostic and determined it qualified for the TSB. They replaced the springs too even though I have a long bed.

Service advisor said when I pick up the truck that the TSB didn’t totally eliminate the noise and that was that. I emailed corporate and said it helped but didn’t fix it so keep my case open.

So I still have the howl but it seems to get louder and softer by the week. Last week it was hardly noticeable, this week has been pretty bad.

I also changed the rear oil with Amsoil, didn’t help.

I’ve got some slightly larger tires I need to install and I’m hoping it’ll change something. We’ll see.

Unfortunately ALL of the dealers in Dallas/Ft. Worth have mediocre service departments. You would think with North America HQ a few miles away, and a factory in San Antonio it would be different.

    But it is not.

    I am embarrassed for them.

Got my '18 OR DC MT at the dealer now waiting on parts for TSB, will report back. Curious though, how many folks with this issue have a 6MT? Wondering if it makes any difference, whatever extra slack or lack thereof might exist in the drivetrain vs auto.

After having 7 recalls on a leased 2014 silverado, I would not put anything past a car maker.

Has anyone ever had their rear axle fail? Personally I think it's a resonanance from the differential that follows up the driveshaft. If members are having the center diff changed out and it doesn't help kind of tells you that it's a resonance noise. If every replacement made noise then the majority of Tacoma owners would have the noise which isn't the case. I'm not saying Toyota shouldn't fix the noise but I don't think anyone is going to have a differential failure. The last thing Toyota wants is a unsafe condition to exist. They would be recalling every Tacoma and not allowing customers to have them back just like they did with the diff leaks.

Mine could be made to kind of chirp on demand by feathering throttle up and down. Without changing vehicle speed. So I'm hesitant now to say it's the diff. And the sound isn't linear enough, relatively, to be an rpm thing, whether that be engine rpm, axel/shaft, or diff rpm.

I appreciate the confidence you have in Toyota but their past litigation says they do not always put customer safety first. No manufacturer does. As I posted before, friends of mine nailed them for $34 million on the unintended acceleration cases. When the jury verdict came out they were dumbfounded by Toyota’s completely unbelievable defense which basically said that customers were too stupid to know where to place their floor mats.

I LL’d my 15 Yukon and 09 Traverse but my 01 Suburban was the best family vehicle we ever owned. My Ford and Silverados were far more trouble free than my Tacos. But, I still prefer midsize trucks.

Of all the manufacturers I would trust Toyota. The unattended acceleration cost Toyota dearly and they have learned a lot from it. In all fairness there were many customers placing mats on mats that was one of the major contributing factors. Toyota is still doing safety improvements on the older Toyota's which consists of a pedal cut. My point being totally ignoring a safety factor such as a diff failure is something that's not going to happen. Proof of this is when the diff started to leak because an assembler forgot to tighten the diff bolts sufficiently. Toyota was so concerned they recall the effected Tacomas and if a leak was found they held the truck.

I hope all is well with the diffs but I’ve never had a modern day vehicle do what mine does. I’m not hopeful they will fix it at this point but would be stoked if they did.

I've never actually known of someone to use the Lemon Law procedure once, let alone 4 times. That's pure insanity.

Not if you’ve owned a bunch of crappy cars. I’ve owned over 30 new cars.

Recently been hearing a faint whirring/spinning bearing type noise. It's quiet but I can hear it when accelerating and decelerating. If the truck is in neutral or I push in the clutch It stops even if the truck is still in motion . I suspect it could be the diff since it hums at the usual highway speeds, but I don't think I've noticed it at sub 40mpg city driving before. I recently did an oil change and had a dash message for "check brake system" appear also 2 days ago. It's been really windy and dusty due the fires in my local also.

I’m meeting with a corporate rep next week about my truck. It appears the plan is to replace the leaf springs. We will see how it goes.

Oh man. You are one of a kind lol. I have owned over 40 vehicles between me, wife and two children and never even thought about it. If I get a crap vehicle I just get rid of it and move on.
I will remember this tidbit of information.
