Wait, do you have a 3rd gen? Because these aren’t for 2013. This is 3rd gen only...unless your profile is only reflecting a 2013? Please see first post of this thread for all updates, information and list of products for sale. Apologies if I am mistaken. However, seeing this is a 3rd gen Tacoma parts marketplace, and the thread subject states the years, I wouldn’t want you to get hopes up too high if 2013 is the model year you were expecting? If you do have a 3rd gen, then I stand corrected in advance.

You can purchase the remote starter and smart phone module at different times, But remote starter has to come first. I preprogram then to be future proof because sooner or later, everyone comes to the dark side when they want to take it to the next level. However you have to have a remote starter in order to add a smart phone module, you can’t just add a smart module on its own, it’s not a stand alone unit, it piggy backs off the remote starter.

Honestly, only coverage. Bandwidth is minmimal as it’s only bytes for the app commands going to and from your car. Also subscription is $29.99/yr vs $39.99/yr. still minimal but I have to disclose this. You’re talking $2.50/mo versus $3.33/mo...not noticeable to some. Coverage maps help if you’re rural in determining as one gentlemen on here had no ATT 3G or 4G coverage in the outskirts.

Might want to check the link I posted too. Verizon (which the phone modules don't use) is shutting 3G down at the end of 2019. AT&T (which they do use) hasn't announced a shutdown date, but is expected to turn off 3G in 2020 or 2021. When AT&T shuts down 3G coverage for the 3G remotes will go to zero.

Coverage is the only difference as bandwidth is negligible. The commands are only a byte. Subscription goes to $39.99/yr and there may not be longer renewal periods for cheaper. The Verizon CDMA was garbage which is why I don’t and never have sold it.

Now let me clear up some misconceptions here. The following is based on my discussion with Verizon and smart module manufacturer:

Verizon is doing away with CDMA after 2019 and 3G after 2022, however, this means they are not taking new activation plans after that date. It DOES not mean you’ll wake up one day and your old phones and iPads and whatever else has a 3G chipset will stop working. They will continue to be fine, they are grandfathered in. The towers aren’t going to be shutting the signal down. So what does this mean? Why are they doing it like this? This is meant to NOT affect the consumer, (unless he/she tries to buy a data plan after those dates for a phone that’s been off the grid before then), but this is rather meant to affect the manufacturers of data devices to FORCE them to start migrating up and keeping up with the times. A manufacturer won’t make devices with data chipsets that won’t work when hot off the like post 2019 and 2022, those are useless paper weights. With that said, it also has to do with coverage which you can check on a map. I personally will keep my 3G in my Tacoma till it breaks (Tacoma will likely break first). So really, why are they doing this? Well, this is because they don’t want then “perception” that their network is slow as apps become more data intensive, so mainly smart phones and iPads. Think 4K YouTube and soon 8K on the horizon. Using a 3G smart phone to watch the new standard of video resolution which will become as mainstream as 1080p is today; won’t be pretty on an old phone and people are just going to blame Verizon, but in reality they should keep up with the times and purchase a new smart phone or streaming device! Now back to our devices in relation to bandwidth, our smart modules are streaming 4K videos, they’re only sending byte sized commands, so you’ll never experience latency, choppiness or lag. That’s why it comes back to coverage where you live and work. 3G is just fine, plus save yourself the subscription costs, and the module itself will also cost more. Rule of thumb, if you have an LTE phone but it shows anything less than 3G where you’re live and work, such as 2G, 1X, EDGE or “No Service”, then you have a valid concern. 3G is backwards compatible with all of those except the “No service” obviously, but I wouldn’t want that for you either, you’ll notice that, hence why I sent back a stock of Verizon CDMA. No one needs to worry. I wouldn’t use it, keep it or sell you something I wouldn’t use myself on my own vehicle and stand behind it. That’s bad for business. None of you would ever come back for more and even more so, refer me and my products. That’s more important to me than profit.

    Thanks for clearing this up

So when you say 3G is backwards compatible with Edge / 2G etc.....if we DO have Edge / 2G coverage on our phone but not quite 3G, the phone app should still work? A slow data signal is still a good-enough data signal?

Makes sense about the no service....no service is no service
