4x4 or Not?

I've only had one 2wd truck . It's that one I used to have that always got stuck. I've had 6 4wd's since.

 

This is not true. A 2wd will get better mpg's then a 4x4 truck. Go look at the EPA ratings for every single truck that is both 2wd and 4x4, the 2wd always gets better mileage. There is just less things spinning that take power to turn.

To be honest I've gotten 4x4's stuck also but it's rare.

 

As a mechanic, I have worked on many 4 WD and 2 WD drive pick-ups and I presently own a 2 WD Tacoma as even though I live in Canada where there is a lot of snow, I rarely need 4 WD. My last 4 WD was nice for 5 years and then I was constantly repairing 4 WD system so this time I went 2 WD as I never go odd road. I used to work on a fleet of GM 4WD and there was always one broken with something while we had a old Dodge 2 WD that was constantly abused and hardly ever broke. As far as resale, you pay a lot less for a 2 WD in the first place, and yes they get better gas mileage. According to some on this website a 4 cylinder 2 WD is worthless but I have been to 2 dealers for parts and both have came out and offered me close to what I have paid for it and said they have customers looking for 2 WD . 4WD only helps with traction - you still need winter tires for braking and steering. Remember: most of what you own has been delivered with 2 WD.

 

Also canadian, i offroad, and go for drives every snow storm in my 2wd. In fact you'll see people ripping around in a clapped civ during snow storms on all seasons lol. 4wd is a safety net for going into something you probably should'nt have. I recently registered for SWAT (severe weather assistance team) which is for helping emergency responce (nurses, doctors etc) that cant make it to work in huge snow storms and my 2wd does it just fine. I wonder if its an american thing to think its 4x4 or bust

 

I have a double cab 2005 2wd with v8. I’ve had it for years, and been a great truck, 120,000 miles. Automatic with the sealed tranny (no dipstick or fill). I have never had a problem with it, runs great, very comfortable, everything I need, as strong as the day I got it. I hunt and haul anything I want, no problem. I keep pretty aggressive tires on it and have gotten where I need to go. I’ve chickened out on a few roads logging type roads before and thought of wishing for 4wd, but should be walking when hunting anyway. Only thing I’ve had done is the timing belt job with all the bearings and water pump with Oem parts including Toyota coolant.

I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it.
