    about to change the tranny fluid in my 96 2.7 4x4 with 237k.
    what is the absolute best tranny fluid to go with? and from what ive gathered i should not be using gl5? correct? im definitely looking for smooth shifting and extended life, obviously just kinda waiting to see how long it holds together. thanks for the help in advance.

    I use AMSoil severe gear
    $29 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75w-90 in my tranny which is GL-5. They also make a 75w-90 GL-4. I've heard good things about Redline MT90 as well.

    Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you want to run GL-5 :notsure:? I haven't read up on why since I haven't had any problems running the severe gear.

    GL-5 Dyno oil contains an additive that eats copper alloys. Granted it would take forever for it to eat the synchros but why risk it. Second, it's just a tad to "slick" IMHO. I have heard of guys having weird shifting issues with it, but that was during my stay on another board. They issues were resolved when they switched back to GL-4 Dyno. I ran the Amsoil severe gear in my 98 5 speed (W59) without issue. It is rated a GL-5 but the synthetics don't contain that additive.

    gotcha, so the synchro eating additives are in the dyno GL-5 oils, not the synthetics
