Anyone here install a backup camera into an older Tacoma? I just down/up graded (depending on how you look at it) from a 2010 prerunner to a 2007 tacoma SR5 4x4. It has a bed cap on it and I’m really starting to miss my back up camera. Amazon has a back up camera on sale that replaces the tail gate handle. Just looking to see if someone has done this and what Head unit upgrade you used. Thanks

got a link on the back up camera handle? id live to swap out my oem one for a camera one and maybe with locking capability... if nothing else, cleaner than adding one mounted to license plate.

    My 5 lug was prewired.

Picked up a used handle/camera and a used rearview mirror and wound up with an OE setup, PnP

You might want to examine your '07 closely and see if that opportunity is available for you

@Clearwater Bill do you have a link for the mirror you used? The ones I looked at real quick on Amazon look like if I use them wires will be exposed from the mirror to the over head.

    You add

Rear view mirror harness trim 87818-04010 Toyota calls it 'wire cover upper Tacoma' or 'cover, inner RR view'

I used an OE mirror I got from the B/S/T forum here. Temp, compass, autodim, camera display.

Did not seek homelink, as it handled that this way https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/cheap-free-mods.4838/page-88#post-9881339

Another question @Clearwater Bill, your setup doesn’t turn on when you throw it in reverse? I’m only asking because my plan is to link the camera up with the bacck up lights so it engages when I put it in reverse

Sure it does. That's why you install it!

If the truck is prewired, that's already set up.

Oh gotcha! So if mine already has the setup I’m good to go. Even better @Clearwater Bill

@Tacomasprime05 yeah I’m looking to go to double din head unit and connect the camera to that. Alpine has a nice one that is getting great reviews but the cost has been keeping me from pulling the trigger. You have any recommendations?

I've been considering going the other route and replacing the mirror for exactly the same reason. So pricey to replace the radio unit and the dash. That being said, in my research, the alpine one has come up a few times as well.

I installed a Pioneer Nex Head unit, with a Pop-N-Lock camera on a 2006 PreRunner.
Included iData Maestro to display ODB2 info, to include tire pressure data on the TouchScreen.
Head unit has Apple Car play, and the camera gives it a full technology upgrade.
"Got everything pre-wired from Crutchfield", so it was mostly plug and play.

Ran the camera wire on the drivers side thru a rubber grommet on the floor board to the head unit.

We went with a Pioneer Nex that did NOT have a CD/DVD player, considering the media would be driven via USB phone/tablet. I noticed the radio now weighs as much as a cell phone, with no moving parts.

The rest of the family has Apple devices, so the unit was Apple Car Play ready, as opposed to Android Auto. NOT all units do both.

I highly recommend getting the idatalink Maestro, and ordering from Crutchfield to include their Pre-Wiring service, that includes all the harnesses connected together for you. I enjoy wiring stuff, but not worth the headache. Their Tech support is responsive with any questions about the unit itself and the installation.

I ordered the camera/latch/lock from another vendor.
