Sorry to beat a dead horse here, slowly getting into recovery gear. Searched and searched but never found a solid answer. What would you recommend getting for a DCLB taco? I’m on the fence between a 17k lb strength strap or a 24k lb strength.

Again sorry to ask, just wanting to go with the correct one. I don’t have any armor or racks, pretty basic stock truck.

Also, what strength shackles would you recommend? I’m looking at ARB shackles but unsure of which ones to get.

I have both sizes and they both work...our trucks are only around 6500lbs loaded up if your lucky! Obviously more strength less likely to break.

I use Rhino shackles from Amazon 41K break strength...work great.

Some must haves for the guy getting into recovery gear....

    1. recovery bag, 30 cal ammo can ( I love having everything easy to grab and together)
    2.Tree saver strap
    3. 3 d-ring shackles ( I live by the rule 1 is none, 2 is 1)!
4.Snatch block or pulleys, these under rated and are AWESOME! Can double the weight and cuts the amount of work the winch is doing when used properly
    5. Tow/ snatch strap
    6. Bottle jack w/ extension (Safejack)
    7. Wooden platform for jackbase ( a couple 2x6's nailed together)
    8. Max traxs etc... (any version)

These are just a few items that would make any recovery easier! I suggest practicing for the real moment! You can put it together yourself or there are kits ready made to buy complete! Good luck my friend and go get stuck.....its fun!:mudding::mudding:

Awesome! I appreciate the insight. I was just reading the bigger load strap you get it’ll defeat the purpose of having the stretching ability. Looks like I can’t go wrong with a 24k lb one though. Thank you sir! Happy holidays.

No worries! Yes, the stronger/ wider the less "pliable" and stretchy...you basically need 1" of strap for every 10,000lbs....I love those really stretchy dynamic recovery straps...until I get $200 to spend on a recovery strap.....the ones I have will do!

Same to you my friend! Gobble, gobble!

    Good words, IMHO.

I started cheap just for security sake and since pucker is going to keep me from Sending It unnecessarily. I got:

    -- HF 30ft / 6,000lb strap
    -- Extra HF 3/4in shackle
    -- Receiver shackle
    -- Shovel
    -- 20ton bottle jack

Someday, I will upgrade to a kinetic strap and soft shackles.

I snatch a lightened Dodge Tradesman up a few slopes with no problems being gentle as possible. As snatcher, what is key is to take up the slack as gently as possible. As snatchee, it is your job to keep a bit of tension in the strap if you start moving on your own.

Same! I've been meaning to pick up some of these (or similar). Less blunt, heavy object I have tied to the end of a highly-tensioned rope, the better.

Are the soft shackles better than the traditional metal ones?

One thing that no one has probably told you yet is that you need to look at the Working Load Limit (WLL) of your Snatch Strap. WLL and Break Strength are two different things. WLL is the safe amount that your strap can withstand while keeping the integrity of the synthetic fibers. If you use the strap over the WLL limit too often, the strap can lose some of it's strength over time which leads to early failure. Break strength is how much the strap will take if the total weight is suddenly "dropped" or "snapped" onto the strap.

If the strap you are looking at has a WLL limit of 24k, you should be safe. It's always good to have extra, because you are not always pulling just the truck. You will be pulling against the friction of the ground, and if the stuck vehicle is dug into the mud, it will add more "weight" to what you are pulling.

I've found them good for towing out other vehicles. They can get into some tight areas and steel ones can't bend. I've been using them for a few years now with great success.

Very much. If the strap or shackle fails, there is no metal object coming at you or the other person. They're more than twice the price though.

If you're new to offroad, you're less likely to get in a real bad spot where you need high capacity. Just help over an obstacle or 10ft out of the mud. That's were the basics are good enough with the proper mindset.

Hot damn TW!! Some good advice, clearly these gentlemen have some experience here! I have soft shackles as well, just bought them bubbas! Will be trying these out this weekend for the first time! God I love getting stuck on purpose! Shackles are a good place to start, once you catch yourself in those situations where the little things start to make a huge difference....YOU ARE THERE! Ha!
