We would recommend going back to see if the tire balances correctly if it is rotated 180 degrees. If not send us a PM with your information. We would be happy to get you in touch with a customer care agent.

On my dime? I don't have time to just go to a tire place and try that nor pay for it. Is the tire still in spec with all of those weights?

Maybe i'm not understanding then. Wouldn't this require me to take it back to the tire place and have them redo the tire? With them rotating it.

Also, still trying to figure out if the tire is in spec and needs to be swapped or not

Tires and wheels are not perfectly round (which is why you balance), so moving forward the tire should be 180'd on the wheel then balanced again. If a high amount of weight is called for again then the wheels should be inspected for runout. If the wheel is in good shape then the likely culprit is the tire.

Check out this article for more details on tire balance: https://www.discounttiredirect.com/learn/tire-balancing

Thanks. I do know my stock tires on the wheels were fine. They only required a few weights. What do you think in terms of spec? You had said if its more than 1% then its a bad tire? If it is I'd like to get it replaced.

Take the damn thing back to the idiots that balanced the tire. Tell them to pop all the weights, off then pop the tire off the beed, spin it 180 degrees and re balance the damn thing. Bring your receipt and tell them they are not charging you.

Not sure what the problem is with doing this. I recommended it and discount tires has recommended it more then once. it’s very common to do this. Just do it already for Christ sakes.

The tech mentioned it because he's letting you know "hey, I want you to know we did the job correctly but no two assemblies are the same, so if you have issues come back and we'll try another method". One method would be rotating the assembly 180 and resetting the beads. The valve stem marks on tires are no longer relevant with these newer balancers. They have a feature where it will have you mark the tire and wheel separately and line up the marks to make a perfect match. They don't do that on every vehicle because its time consuming and most of the time it wont even make a difference. Honestly, with any tire around the 265/285+ range that asks for anything more than 6oz combined I would do a static balance. That much weight in two planes can have the same effect as counter-balancing. And abodyjoe, Goodyear and BFGoodrich tires consistently ask for more weight, even when rotated 180. I see it every day and most of them are happy customers. I don't see how the techs are idiots. If it rides fine then let it be. Over time it will ask for less weight. When you buy tires from discount tire, you get free rotations, balance, repairs etc. For the life of the tires. That includes a vibe check if you want. And regardless of if you bought the warranty you're covered for 90 days should you decide you want that tire replaced. You don't even need your receipt it's all in their system at any of their 1,000 locations. They're a great company.

So should I just live with it if it balanced to zero? Or have them do the 180 thing...

You don’t need to 180 the tire like some are saying. That doesn’t always help, and in some cases will actually make it worse. What you DO need is to have someone more experienced balance them for you. I’ll do it for free if you want (Master Toyota Tech, in the industry for 10 years). You would only need to pay to ship them to me, but I can promise they would be 100%. Balancing wheels PROPERLY is kind of an art form. Just because the machine says they are “zero’d out” doesn’t mean they are actually balanced. Most people just do what the machine says (If it says add weight they add weight)... WRONG! The trick is: If the machine says 8oz for example, start with somewhere around 4oz and put them EXACTLY where they are specified to go. If is asks for more weight slightly next to it, remove them and slide them over. Do this until it asks for more weight basically on top of the weights you used and at that point you can add more. I can almost guarantee that your wheels will be balanced out correctly with less weight. Whoever balanced your wheels is a fuckin hack. Like I said, I’d be more than happy to do it for you at only the cost of shipping.

Thanks for the offer, but I don’t have the money to ship. Discount tote said that if they can’t balance going 180, they’ll look into swapping the tire. I was gonna go in Saturday.
