OEM vs After market cause of the issue?

Does anyone know an upgraded part number for a rear axle?

Toyota said 2 yrs ago that needs replacement then I went to less expensive shop $600 dollars , changed axle seal, bearing, shoes, then 15 days ago i noticed leak again , when back and they said they did it again, leak again so they believe something else , sent me to dealer and back to start same diagnostic.

Toyota said because 3rd party shops dont use OEM and kind of make sense , for this job is over 800 dollars in parts with the rear axle for just one side.

Im waiting for a friend to look at it and to do it for a 3rd time , this time going OEM regardless of the price.☔️

Mine does not keep up when wheeling. Black truck an the desert sun don't help though.

I'd be willing to bet the shop pushed the retaining ring that the seal should mate with on too far. I've had a dealer do this. If you have abs you can look in the hole and see it's not right. Or pull the axle, smear some grease on the ring and put it back in and spin it. Pull it back out and it should give you an idea where the seal sits on the ring.

As said it's likely an install mess up with the retainer ring. Even the dealership has been known to fuck up that.

Wait, $800 in parts??? For each side, you need 1 seal, 1 bearing, 2 bearing retainers, and 1 ABS skid control rotor (tone ring). Plus replace the brake shoes if they got soaked, and refill the gear oil in the diff. You're talking maybe $150 total for all OEM parts.

If you paid a dealership $800 for parts alone, you got scammed bad.

Installed the pioneer DEH-S400BT head unit on my base model tacoma. Quite the upgrade from the stock radio only headunit and the sound is great. Wired the bluetooth mic to come out by the steering wheel in the spot the later models have the airbag on/off. Total cost was 150 canadian.

    Ah...

    No.

Cost me about 600 in parts from the dealer with no tone rings.

The bearings are expensive. And dealership prices are never cheap.

It's not a 150 setup no matter what

    Bearing Retainer - P/N 42423-20010 - $16.80 each
    Oil Seal - P/N 90310-50006 - $5.71
    Skid Control Rotor - P/N 43517-35010 - $46.62
    Bearing - P/N 90363-40068 - $59.26

    Total = $145.19

Those are prices from Camelback. And I didn't have that bearing cost in mind, I just bought a Timken that matches the OEM exactly for probably 1/4 of the price. So add in brakes and gear oil, maybe $175?

Edit: scratch that, I bought the bearing from the dealer too, which is apparently a Timken.

Yeah for both sides with brakes and all, 400 is about right.

Speaking of which, I still need to replace that drivers side shaft and do the seal and bearing. I'm sure that'll be cheap. Are there any good aftermarket axle shafts short of 300m shafts?

You’re all right ... installation can be where the mess up occurred
On the 580 job 2yrs ago i bet was not OEM parts, invoice was 190 on parts you mentioned the rest just labor. 2week ago breather got changed $47 and they said they did the seal again somehow I doubt it.

Fact is that toyota dealer diagnostic axle shaft to be replaced (upgraded part) 2yrs ago for over $3K changing drums and shoes at both sides.
Now 11-17-18 i took it leaking for diagnostic and didnt mentioned the seal was already changed, then they quote the parts and oil seal all of you mentioned with labor for $990, was late then I told the advisor that another shop already did that , so if we continue to do the same , we will get same results, i leave truck there and returned early morning Monday to pick up as is ( leaking) then they changed the quote to $2K now including the replecement of the 1 side axle shaft .....to be continue...:annoyed:

There's a few options, all with some nuances.

Do you have ABS and/or and elocker axle? If so, it doesn't leave you with many options. I put in some Yukon chromoly shafts this spring to replace a bent one, and have no complaints.

Thanks gents. I have neither ABS nor an elocker, thank god for that lol

Still working on getting an FZJ80 or LX460 9.5" housing for a reasonable price, that would be my first choice. Not sure I could live with myself if I started putting Ferd parts on my truck.

I could. Plan to actually. Can't beat a 9in for under 300 haha

An fzj80 would be my choice for Igor though. But people are way to proud of those for some reason

Yeah for straight beating on that's a good choice. I'd like to keep it toyota if at all possible, I found a 9.5" for 400 but it's a ways down the coast, not sure how to get it up here haha

That a decent price. Really good if it's the elocker.

Someone must be close by that could meet you half way?

SoCal, so halfway is still a long ways haha. Might be able to make something work, we'll see.

Not an e-locker, definitely prefer an airlocker in there since I'll be doing gears anyway.
