    What’s a passive alarm?

It should be active when turned off?

Passive and active anti-theft devices are the two options available when considering an anti-theft system. Passive devices automatically arm themselves when the vehicle is turned off, the ignition key removed, or a door is shut. No additional action is required.

I Probably used wrong term. From recollection it is an alarm that is armed when doors are locked, and disarmed when a keyless entry of some kind unlocks.

Only uses door switches, hood switches, and other existing sensors.

Thanks, ok that kind of makes sense. Actually makes a lot more sense.

If I can’t use the remote to unlock the doors, I don’t care as long as I can unlock manually and the alarm doesn’t go off. “Assuming” that I have an alarm.

In my testing of a subaru (maybe different), manually unlocking with key will cause it to go off as soon as you open the door, and doesnt stop until you stick key into ignition...

Irritating and embarrassing.... it's the spouses' backup key that I carry, hate to use it but it works...

Sounds like the alarm is disabled when the key lock is turned. Just like when the remote unlocks the door. The handle inside does not disable the alarm that's why it goes off when opened from inside...
If you were in AZ I would program the key for you. I just did 2 H chips for my 2017. More Chinese crap I bought off Ebay. But at least they work.

You can buy the transponder chip online for a few bucks. There was a locksmith website that had all the info for manufacturers and which chip each car had. Made two keys for my FJ and I was able to enter programming through a series of brake pushes, ignition turns, door locking and opening/closing. Looked like a dumbass doing it but it eventually worked. Knowing how Toyota doesn’t like changing things, it may still work. Good luck. :drunk:

Thanks, good info. I bought a new key with the transponder H chip already in it shown in my first post.

Which programmer did you use to program the new key? Just bought this one, but can’t get the new key to program. The key I did get cut duplicated at the hardware store so it works to manually open doors and turns on ignition.

I used techstream to program the buttons and the immobilizer H chip. It worked great for the 2 keys like the one you have. I got a 2 pack for $40 from Ebay. A local locksmith charged me $2 each to cut them.
Amazon had the cable and techstream software for $30.
It was pretty easy to program them but it did take a little time to get used to the software.

I also bought a flip key but can only program the buttons so far. I'm having trouble getting the immobilizer programmed.

More info about the flip key here:

Thanks I’ll just go this route, looks like you can do a lot more with Techstream

I bought a programmer but it never worked. The FJ has a way to manually enter programming, so I ended up getting it to work with no programmer.

Im a honda tech but can only assume this is the same for toyotas. Most new cars have a switch on the backside of the key tumbler on the doors. when you turn the key in the door it activates the switch that then disables the alarm. That is why the alarm will not go off when you unlock it with the key. But when you unlock the door from the inside and then open the door it goes off because its not activating the switch on the backside of the tumbler. It doesnt matter if they key is programmed or not when your using it in the door.

The manual procedures didnt work on my 2017. I tried the open and close the door and turn the key on and of one, did not work. The press the brake open the door didn't work either.
It had to be programmed with techstream for the buttons and immobilizer.

Think about that for a minute the alarm goes off if u open the door .So the alarm is doing its job if the vehicle is locked and someone pry's the door open then the alarm will go off .If u just pull on the handle it wont do anything until the door is open .

There is a glass breakage system that Toyota makes for these, and it's only about $150, but installation is another 400 with re-programming and only can be installed on autos, not manuals.

Least it's not auto locking doors when doors are shut no matter vehicle is in drive or not. I remember a few cars in my life that would do that. Along with auto seatbelts that finally got banned.

Have you tried it on the Tacoma? That would be great if you lost a key in the field. I have a non-chip key I keep in my wallet.

Actually, the problem is my alarm doesn’t go off when armed and open doors manually from inside or out with the original key.

It only goes off if I hold the panic button. So not sure what’s up.

My new key I got duplicated at the hardware store and works manually but nothing on the new key works can’t program the buttons.

I self installed the GBS on my 2018 auto OR. Plug and play, no re-programming needed. I wonder why it wouldn't be available for manuals?
