    Holy shit man sorry to hear this. Won't be hard to find a spare engine. 185k is way too short of a life, that thing had another 200k in it

    It doesn't help you now anyway but those mods sound like they in theory can send a lot more air thru your engine so without fuel management it may have run hot. I don't know how much the ECU can learn those mods.
    Just something to be aware of maybe with your next engine.
    I'm at the same mileage as yours and will be swapping in a 2UZ if my engine ever goes

    interesting.... OV tune with a 91 octane tune sounds like a pretty peppy hope-nothing-goes-wrong tune. Tho id imagine knock sensors would do their job and keep predetonation under wraps.

    But DAMN.


    Either way, a short block off any single vvti 1gr will be your best bet. Newer and less milage the best obviously. stay away from 03-06 motors as they had headgasket issues.

    Throwing a rod on these motors is NOT common at all.

    someone with more knowledge can chime in but from what I understand the 12-15 engine is also compatible after swapping the passenger valve cover and exhaust manifold. so I would search for any 4.0 from 05-15

    You might even be able to get away with using the passenger side valve cover off the 12-15 motor, i think it just has some extra tabs for the smog pump valves to mount on to. You will have to use the 05-11 manifolds as those do not have the ports for the smog pump, or you could use the 12-15 manifolds and make a blockoff for the holes.

    I doubt he "threw a rod" for running lean.. Looking at the Tie-Rod boot and old oil residue on your LCA mounts.. its clear you "sorta" neglected your truck.. 6k between oil changes too.. granted oil changes with full syn dont need to be every 3k but when you beat the shit out ur truck, a 3k inspection is a good piece of mind (why i change my oil every 3k).. did you check your oil level any time near the motor throwing a rod?

    Topped oil level off with 1/2qt at 5k 3wks ago as I didn't have time change it then. In the 40k miles I've put on this truck that seems to be par for the course, 1/2qt between changes.

    Drivers side valve cover would be easy, but it does look like the heads are different 05-11/12-15. Theres small holes above the exhaust ports for EGR? My 06 headers wouldn't work. Id need factory manifolds or need to buy the 12-15 headers and block off plates.

    I have quite a few toyota specific recyclers local to me so the prices are competitive. You can get a sub 100k 1GR for 2000 give or take. 2200 seems like the upper limit of price and that will get you a 12-15 1gr with about 50k. The recyclers here know about compatibility issues and will sell a low mileage 1gr from an earlier year for a premium and they are rare. Same goes with the low mileage a750 from earlier years. In any case, I would just shoot for a unit from 05-11 with low mileage. The good thing about used engines is you can actually verify the mileage with the VIN because recyclers are known to be shady. www.mycarfax.com will give you unlimited a free reports on mileage with either the VIN or license plate.

    Well, here's how much coolant came out of the radiator.

    I guess I'm going to be pulling the heads to see what's going on up there. Gonna pull cylinder 1 spark plug and and see if it's clean as a whistle. Or all of them for that matter.

    Head gasket blew and hydrolocked cylinder 1? Or when the rod went it took out a coolant passage in the block? :notsure:
