Welded for the first time today, something I've been wanting to get into for a while. Snuck into my grandfather's shop while he is gone on a trip and used his welder. Never been taught just watched a lot of YouTube videos. Here's my results
I started out holding the gun right handed because it felt more natural holding it, but it wasn't going so well so I switched to my left hand because I write left hand so I thought it might be a bit more natural movement even though it felt goofy holding it. These were my first 5 beads.
    20181122_145025.jpg
I flipped it over and laid a few more flat beads.
20181122_145247.jpg Then I wanted to try and weld 2 pieces together. I prepped the bottom of this piece a little bit so I wasn't as rusty as the rest. Then just welded the back side for the hell of it without preppingthe metal.
    Front 20181122_144628.jpg backside
    20181122_144542.jpg
After this I welded 2 going downhill at roughly 45 degree slope and one with it straight up.
Overall I'm pretty happy with how it went for my first time. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Not bad at all especially for your first time. Those welds will definitely hold some stuff together

So in essence the cleaning time is factored into the price of the products being sold.

Before my Divorce put the halt to Fabricating full time clean up time was factored into the jobs.

Now being only me I adhere to if it is a flat surface things seem to pile up.

Working 10 and 12 hour days telling people to read the owners manual the home projects are slowing down

First picture is a friends diy moonshine distille keg. He did the fit up. I just welded it. Second picture is my son getting some tig welding in. He has a interview next week at a aerospace company as a welder.

so whats the thought on keying frame mounts into a rear bumper vs having the tube sit "on" the angle iron i plan to use for the frame mount? like below if it makes sense. the tube would go all the way to the angle sides. i have the trail-gear universal rear bumper kit. should be same strength at least shouldnt it? with realistically more weldable surface to add

Should be plenty strong. My frame plates have a square hole in them that the rear tube runs through. How big is the angle you are using?

Any of you guys had issues with your Hobart welders? Mine is having issues at the moment. Figured I'd post and rant a bit.

So I ordered my Swag Offroad press brake and it came in the mail last week. I finally get to weld it together and all is going well until I start to run my first real bead. All I get is sputtering and booger welds with no penetration. I give it another go and I get the exact same result, slightly different settings. I did this for entirely too long and now my work piece is full of booger globs. First mistake was continuing to weld on my work piece, I know. Eventually I grabbed a piece of scrap and ran a ton of beads on it to try and work the bugs out. I was able to make a good pass so I went back to my work piece. Its like a monkey jumped on my machine and hit with a hammer. Nothing came out right. After all this, I check the machine and its the feed speed control. The potentiometer had broken. The threaded portion on the housing had broken off and was allowing the knob and contacts inside to basically float around. I took the machine apart and pulled it out. Just blows my mind how cheap parts make it in to and expensive welding machine like this. I'm currently waiting on my replacement part but for the time being, I've JB Welded the housing back together enough to get me by. This is really making me want to upgrade in the future. I want a machine that at least uses good solid parts for the the user interface and not cheesey junk.

Sounds like the knob got a good thump at some point to do that. Is the replacement part # a Miller # perchance?

It sure is. Can only buy the part retail under the Miller name. I don’t believe they sell it as a Hobart part number or at least I couldn’t find it.

I have a Hobart 210 MVP and I had a Cap pop at 7 months. Took it into a local place that was authorized to warranty the machine. Took a week to get back and it’s worked flawlessly for the last 3 years.

I've got a question about flux core wire feed welders. I've used MIG, but don't want to get into gas supply and all that, and I have an old Lincoln 225 stick. Trying to weld light guage with tiny rods is frustrating to say the least. The 225 cranked up for 1/4inch steel is great, but a lot of my little jobs require a more delicate touch.

So, Canadian Tire here has a flux core welder on sale for a great price. Just wondered if it's worthwhile for the odd job needing a delicate touch. Thoughts?

    Thanks
    Ralph

PS, couldn't figure out how to make a new thread!

I don't associate welding thin iron with flux core. It can be done if you have lots if experience , but that kind of defeats your purpose.

The learning curve using gas is much shorter.

I am biased. I've been wire welding with gas for 25 years. Once I switched from flux core I knew I was never going back.

MIG is great, just don't do it enough to justify buying the setup. Right now I just drop a few bucks at a buddy's place to use his. I'll have to ruminate on whether it's a worthwhile purchase.
