Youd be a hero to many (including myself) if you posted a write up/review/install thread for one of the newer Pioneers. Thanks!

I pulled the trigger... ordered the Pioneer AVIC W8400NEX and install accessories. The only thing that I really don’t like about the truck is the Entune no carplay. What pushed me over edge was the Toyota information about Entune 3.0 and no chance of a Carplay upgrade. I like Toyota products but I will always go aftermarket from now on for my electronics.

Any Toyota radio out there now or in future will not stand a chance against the quality and features of the 8400. Great choice and you won’t regret it. You will never look back

I’m confident on the install... have a local friend if I get stuck... I’d like a pic of the finished product in the dash if you could... I saw one somewhere but now I can’t find it.
    Thanks.

This may be a bit oxymoronic to ask as obviously the new pioneer head units will work in the Tacoma. I have a 2015 Taco and am looking to pick up a w4400nex but have been hesitant to do so since everywhere I look it says that radio will not fit in our Tacos.

So I pose the question, will the w4400nex fit and if so are any modifications required to do so?

I'll be ordering a radio in the next week, hoping to catch a cyber Monday deal or something, for my full system upgrade. Also to eagle or anyone else wanting an install thread ill be doing one for mime, Head unit, amps, subs, wiring etc :)

It should fit but the space is a little tight. Just be careful to jimmy the wires out from behind the unit as you push it into place.

    Thank you for the reply!

I figured it should, the 4201nex and w4400nex are the exact same size head units with a slightly different layout on the rear. The 4201nex shows to be compatible so I assumed that maybe the rear layout is what caused an issue with wiring being too bulky or protruding to far back.

I'm prepared to do modifications if necessary but I'm not prepared to buy a HU that I can't use. Lol especially at the $600 pricepoint.

Crutcfield is saying it won't fit in a 2nd gen, they give a measurement of 7.195 on the radio depth and 7.126 on the dash depth. I am looking into this radio also and was hoping someone successfully installed one in a 2nd gen before I pull the trigger.

I recently installed the AVIC-8200 NEX in my second gen. It was super tight and I had to do a lot of custom stuff with the wiring harness to get everything to fit. If you weren’t careful you would end up smashing all the wires behind the unit.

This is exactly what I was referring too, the thing is their measurements for the actual HU are wrong, I even emailed Crutchfield and they basically told me their people who add that info know what they are doing and didn't even try and look into it. I scoured the net looking for confirmation on the depth and found this video comparing the 4201/w4400 which shows the HU side by side, the w4400nex is the same size as last years flagship. The guy did tell me if I order it and it doesn't fit they offer a 60 day money back guarantee and I can return it for a refund.

A lot of custom stuff to the wiring harness, Could you elaborate a bit more? I'm glad to know it will for sure work, I'll definitely be picking one up in the next week!

Thanks to all who have contributed to my question!

My “custom work” was basically organizing all the wiring and wrapping it with fire proof engine compartment wiring tape I found on Amazon. I tucked the maestro to the left behind the odometer (lots of room there), and other extra wiring to the right. All very slowly and carefully. I do have a 4way amp for my speakers underneath passenger seat so I didn’t wire my speaker cables behind the receiver. Bottom line is I have no cables floating around behind the dash. My gps antenna is hot glued to the top. And my xm radio receiver is tucked between the metal bar that runs across and the firewall. No issues at all. Took several tries to line up the receiver correctly after screwing the mounts on. So I had to re-do these 2-3x. I wish I had pictures. Makes more sense if you take it all apart and see. Not that bad.
