I always pull the engine without the transmission.

Need a lot of over head space to lift the trans over the rad/core support.

Plus those are addition fluids that you have to worry about.

Id pull the engine by itself. If you're 4wd that's long heavy transmission behind there

Looking at that quote, they want 6 grand in labor?! Dang! At 18-20 hrs with a shop rate of $120 I'd be around $2,100-2,200 or so

Edit.. now I see.. had to zoom in

The only thing I haven't experienced personally with this truck or found in the records is the common head gasket issues found in early Tacomas. From what I can tell this truck is still running as equipped from the factory. That's probably the only thing I haven't had an issue with. I've been sitting on a 2714 solenoid d transmission code for the last year now. It's like I got half a lemon. :notsure: lol

The guy I bought the truck from owned it for about 40k also and handed me a stack of maintenance records and receipts for everthing he did to the truck. I don't have anything bad to say about him, but can't help but feel he knew the truck was a pit since he took my offer of $13,500 for a truck my credit union valued at $17,500 in 2015. I was originally looking for an 04 DC, and realized for just a few g"s more I could get a newer truck with modern bells and whistles. At this point after the motor swap, I could still sell it for what I paid for after putting 40k on it. There's guys asking $14k for 04's and 200k+ on them. Granted that's asking price and what it sells for is never known unless you're the one buying.

I'll have had it 4 yrs on valentines day 2019. I bought it knowing the cats where bad and used that to low ball him. He put the icon lift and bumpers/winch on it in 2012 based on the receipts he handed over. Toyota owners DB shows he maintained it accordingly through his local dealershop, but declined some preventative maintenance recommendations they suggested. Can't blame him, I'd probably have done the same.

Either way, before the motor shit out, I held good equity in the truck. It helps that here in the PNW people have a hard on for these trucks. Just a bump in the road and when I'm done it will be ready to go for another 185k and then some. At this point I'll keep it through paying it off, and move on to the next midlife size vehicle that suits my needs.

I've got a fork lift and 3/8 chain. Will a single point of pick using the 10mm exhaust stud on each head be enough to support the wiggle and contort of the combined 800# assembly? I'd rather not ruin my core support or fenders while trying to extract a worthless/blown engine and failing transmission. If it comes down to it, I'll pluck the motor and drop the trans separatly.

If anything I'll be able to sell the heads or other misc engine components separately providing their undamaged. :fingerscrossed:

I just had to go through an engine replacement as well for similar, less exciting reasons. I was at 175,000. I found a spotless, absolutely gorgeous 60,000 mile Tacoma take out from New Mexico Tacoma. It was complete, pan to intake, harness, flex plate, and even oil cooler. It cost me $3,000 delivered. Found it on Fleabay.

For the hooks, I made a set of lifting hooks out of scrap flat bar. Super simple and super effective. Just used a chain between them. Note, I could not use an engine leveler as my cherry picker was not tall enough to pull the engine over the radiator support.

Good luck, let me know if you have any questions. I literally just got my new setup fired up today. Drove it for the first time in 8 months. So stoked.

$6800 for just the reman and install kit. Labor was just north of $2k for R&I. Good thing I live outside the metro area, the sales tax is another 1%.

I wouldn’t use the exhaust studs. Use the embossed holes for the intake manifold support. Go diagonally across the engine.

6 Grand? Are they going to give you a happy ending every day for the next month? That's way too freaking high.

An engine transplant is difficult yeah but it's definitely not $6,000 labor difficult

    Unless I missed something?

The reman they provide has a 2yr unlimited mile warranty. I only do about 8k miles a year so that makes no difference to me. Not just on the reman but labor too. I had no intention of going that route, just took the printed quote for the hell of it.

I looked at it as their way of politely saying "we're too busy to deal with your broken truck". So they gave me a sky high estimate to discourage me and if I was actually dumb enough to say yes, it would be worth their time to do the job. Also since the block is fubar on my engine, I'll be eating the core/exchange price.

I misread that estimate. The engine price seems a little high, other than that it's pretty fair

I'm having a hard time finding one anywhere near me in that price range. Through carparts and a few other nation wide salvage databases I'm seeing $2k average for engines + freight, and if I want one under 100k it's on the upper end closer to $3k. That's hitting reman prices from some places including the core charge.

Without an oil pressure gauge you won't see that one coming.
