So with some research I'm finding, by surprise, that removing swing-outs on pretty much all the brands that make rear bumpers is a tricky/not encouraged/laborious endeavor. My goal was that I could store in the garage, and only mount for trips (not impossible with current brands, but not "encourageable" to quote other threads- que super mega DIY'ers replies that they love wrenching for hours to do what should be simple tasks)- are there any brands that make their rear bumper swing-outs easily removable on/off nature? I'm not trying to be those Instagram EAF peeps driving in rush hour traffic on weekdays all outfitted like they were going on a trip.

If it's easily removable, it'll fall apart on the trail. Or maybe fall off in the middle of the highway.
I doubt a company wants their label on a product that disjoints easily or haphazardly.

Hell, if left unlatched and un-noticed a swing out can swing out and kill someone or cause serious damage. And I speak from experience, having had one for six years...

Could always get a roof rack and put your eaf shit up there?

That's what I figured but there are threads on brand x, y and z that talk about the difficulty if aligning bearings etc so once installed it's not a good idea to remove it.

Oh. It’s just bearings. It’s not rocket science. It might be a pain if you have a tire still mounted. I’m not an expert by any means but it doesn’t look hard to me

I originally had the same plan as you - get a bumper with swingouts and remove them when I wasn't on a trip. Mostly so I could still fit the truck in our garage, which is really small.

I got a CBI Outback 1.0 dual swing-out, and @mynewtoy is right - "it's just bearings." However, the bearings are a tight fit on the spindles (which is really good most of the time). So tight that I cannot get the driver side off at all. I even used my floor jack and ended up lifting the rear of the truck off the ground by the swing arm. (write-up here, photo below)

This shouldn't have surprised me really - I had to use a rubber deadblow to install the arms in the first place, but it does mean that the swing-arms stay on all the time. Luckily for me, I was able to just fit in the garage if I remove everything from the arms (tire, jerry can holder, etc.).

Anyway, ask if you have questions.

Big thanks @turbodb, your write up is one of the things I ran accross in my research. I think @License2Ill has me mistaken as to wanting flismy mounts or latches that release with a fick of a thumb, I want neither, I just don't want to run into what you did (lifting the whole rear of the truck trying to take it off). BTW your bumper is what I'm about to throw down on ;)

Wasn't saying your looking for flimsy. They should be difficult to remove.
I have the single swing out CBI BTW. I'd avoid CBI if they're currently manufacturing them in the same fashion. I don't have a high opinion of it.

Dang... I also really like the relentless bumper- it does not have a swing out option but I do not have an RTT so a swing out is more for EAF points, I don't need it- when I wheel I just throw all the extra stuff in the bed.

What don't you like about the CBI option?

    BTW happy Thanksgiving peeps.

Ugh. I snapped my first swing out it half from a faulty weld which in turn bent the spindle.

The spindle support wasn't reinforced causing bending in the bumper.

CBI was good and replaced the swing out under warranty along with powder coating. And beefed it up with square bar instead of their original chinsy L-bar design. Which should of been done to begin with for a $2k bumper. I had my fab guy beef up the spindle support, after he pointed out the bumper's short comings which cost around $300.

The edge corners are only 1/4 plate, maybe 14ga. But definitely not 3/16.

After six years my swing out is unremovable. It was a PITA to remove originally, but it won't come off now. Maybe due to wear in the brass bushing/spindle interface?

Definitely my favorite looking 1st gen HC SO bumper. But after the years I'm not all that happy with it .

Maybe they changed the design. But the resent pics of the guys who have it, it looks to be identical.

Checking out the relentless setup, maybe a little easier to take on and off.
I'm getting cold feet with what my order is turning into, lots of money to spend on my old rig.

I see now how the single shear swing out could be hard to take off.

I was thinking of a double shear like my
Mobtown. It’s just 1 bolt you can drive out with a BFH if you need to.

If you are looking to DIY and save cash, check out hardware for farm gates. Stop laughing, I'm serious, as are the farmers raising those cattle that are each worth more than your spare. They don't want strays so their gates have to be foolproof and strong.

The have self closing, self latching systems designed to support the necessary weight for this application. There are many types of hinge system to choose from that can easily be adapted to a tire carrier.

Any supplies you get from an "off road" company are going to have an inflated price.

Interesting- so I gave in to EAF urges and threw down on Relentless front and rear, but I couldn't bring myself to pay $600+ for the swing out, but I bought bare metal and I have a MIG, so thanks for the input because for sure I'm interested in making a DIY swing out project.

That is really neat, I had wondered about a product like that, cool to see someone makes it, but at that price its off the table. Still, cool though.

Cool, please do share when done.

I have been thinking about this myself.

I am considering installing 2 receivers on each end of the bumper and reinforcing them.
My thought is, a double swing, one for the tire and another for the Jerry cans and both latch off center to the custom bumper.
I think if I mount the spindle to a hitch plate that slides into the receivers on each end It would be plenty strong and removable with the pins.
