I just had a Viper 4105v remote start installed in my 18' Sport. It seems that as soon as i open the door while the engine it running, it shuts the motor off. Ive seen this complaint a few times. Am i doing something wrong to cause this or is this a known issue with these modules?

It’s a safety or anti theft feature and ALL Toyota’s do this with ALL remote start modules from my understanding

Does it happen with factory equipment too?

Yes, once a door is opened hatch(suv’s) trunks(cars) or hood is opened the engine will automatically shut off. It’s a Toyota safety or anti theft feature

It’s normal...a feature to protect life and property at expense of inconvenience.

    Other car makers don’t.

What scenario is Toyota trying to prevent?

Someone stealing a running Toyota instead of some other car makers vehicle.

I can’t believe it’s that. Even if they do get in the vehicle without keys, if you touch the brake (to put it in gear), car will shut off if you haven’t put the key in ignition (or key is not in range), on all. That’s a far better way to do it and all manufacturers use that method for anti-theft.

The door thing it so fucking stupid, it’s the only reason I haven’t done remote start. It would piss me off to no-end.

I read this over and over again. People whining about the truck shutting off with door opening. You start the truck 15 min before you are ready to use it. Then you enter the vehicle and press the f-ing button. Truck is warm in winter cool in summer. All this complaining about pressing a button. Must be this new we all are winners generation. Without the remote start YOU STILL NEED TO PRESS A BUTTON ! And the truck is now freezing cold in winter and steaming hot in summer.

My concern is the strain on the starter.

I wouldn't be too worried about the starter turning the engine over twice every morning - think what the poor starter motors in cars with the auto-stop-start feature have to endure daily!!

There's no other way for the immobilizer to switch over from the starter bypass to the key fob. It's also safety as mentioned. All of them do it.

I have the viper and same thing with the door. It is a real pain for me but no one that I'm aware of has a work around for it. What bugged me the most is it shuts off when I'm am getting the snow brush out. Installed the power tailgate lock this week so snow brush is now in the back so it will keep running until I'm ready to go. I've had remote starters for thirty years and the Tacoma is the only vehicle I've had that shuts down when a door is opened.

I don’t see anyone wining in this thread, just saying it’s a stupid implementation. It’s not the fact of having to press the button. It’s paying for / dealing with a sub-par implementation that no other manufacturer makes you deal with that I would find annoying.

I get annoyed at myself when I press the brake before putting in the key in the ignition, (so the engine shuts down), in another vehicle I own. So this daft implementation would pee me off every time I used it.

It’s just like someone shutting the door in you face, you’d have to open the door if they weren’t there, so no extra hassle, it’s just annoying.

This is wrong in everything you said. No other manufacturer that I know of does this. Ford, Jag, Subaru, Audi. They all switch over and never cut the engine. And it’s done by touching the brake (or clutch) before having the key registered. You have to touch the brake / clutch before driving the vehicle.

I uhh...peeled the stickers off. Does that count?
I get that and would agree if I didnt have experience in my 2010 Caddy that had remote start. The car was in "accessory mode" while running which meant the engine was running, the seats warming and the HVAC doing whatever you left it on but the steering wheel was locked and you could not put the car in gear. Once you hopped in the car, you had to put your foot on the break and hit the PTS button to get the car from "ACC" to "ON" (the engine never shut off). Surely that isn't a feature that Caddy has a patent on that no other maker could find a way around?

Other car makers make you lock the door before starting. Toyota is just being annoying. You’d get jacked either way.

Another well thought out Toyota “feature”.

Kinda like the taco seat with no height adjustment.

Seriously? Lets just say you only start the truck once in the morning and then you go to work. Then you start it again to go home. Are you now going to complain about having to shut it off and restart when you need to gas up? Maybe you get pulled over and the officer asks you to shut the truck off. You decide to pull into subway and get some lunch but then realize you need to shut the truck off to go inside to get your sandwich so you say f it and starve so you do not have to use the starter. I don't get it ?? The starter is meant to start the truck. I don't care if you shut the truck off and restart it 500 times in a day. That's what it was meant to do. Maybe you can find a super mechanic to install a pull start like my old mini bike had. But then every time you pull the cord you risk the chance of the rope breaking. When that happens you jam a nickel into the centrifugal clutch and push start that bitch:thumbsup::burnrubber:
