There are enough other threads on here where people have said their Tacoma has braked for them without the cruse being on. With those threads and everything on Toyota’s website, I think it’s pritty safe to say the few that say it only brakes with cruise control are incorrect. Someone also posted the text from their 2019 manual in one of the other threads, it clearly stated it that the vehicle will brake for you in emergency situations.

You guys just don't understand the limits of the technology, this is NOT an autonomous vehicle, even Tesla's which have far more advanced sensor arrays regularly cannot detect stationary objects, there's no easy way to do so with a single small camera and shortwave radar unit, what you're asking it to do (detect stationary boxes) is simply not possible:

"In other words, your Volvo won't brake to avoid hitting a stopped car that suddenly appears up ahead. It might even accelerate towards it. The same is true for any car currently equipped with adaptive cruise control, or automated emergency braking. It sounds like a glaring flaw, the kind of horrible mistake engineers race to eliminate. Nope. These systems are designed to ignore static obstacles because otherwise, they couldn't work at all."

4Runner does not come with TSS.

This question has come up few times. In the manual, it says the system will boost brake sensitivity and brakes can be automatically applied. I'm not sure what the threshold of the determining factors are for the system to apply the brakes.

The takeaway, TSS is something you shouldn’t rely on. Glad I didn’t take the upgrade.

I hope you didn’t scratch your vehicle or damage your ego too much OP.

This seems like something that needs to be completely clarified by Toyota though. I was being told at the dealership TSS is this awesome stopping emergency function as well as the cruise control functions. There’s so much conflicting information and Toyota needs to either update all of the vehicles to make it like Canada’s, if I understand theirs is different, or put out a clear statement.

Sounds like a great feature and something they should implement and not tell us about. People need to depend on their own skills and not nanny-tech to make up for their lack of attention when directing 5,000lb. of steel and plastic.

Yes, read the owner's manual, but does not absolve that the idiots selling the vehicles are saying the wrong information. I do not read an owner's manual when looking at a vehicle. I should for now on.
