I got my Ultra-Gauge MX last month through the TW Group Buy, along with about 60 others. It’s a powerful product that, for me, has required quite a bit of study. I’ve noticed that several others are struggling with some of its features, as indicated by continued posts in the GB thread asking for help. I admit that my “search-fu” isn’t all that strong, but I can’t find a thread dealing with installing, programming, and using the MX on 3G Tacomas. In addition, the user forum on the UG website seems to have been closed, with a notice that the FAQ is comprehensive enough to deal with the issues that were in the forum. I disagree with that assessment, so I’m starting a thread here.

The first thing I checked after getting the unit running in my 2016 6-cylinder 2WD was the list of standard gauges that it could find, and that were available immediately for display. Here’s that list, in pretty much the order they come up:

    % Engine Load | Cat Bank2 Sensor2 oF | Fuel Level (Liters)
Coolant Temp oF | Cat Bank2 Sensor2 oC | Miles to Empty
Coolant Temp oC | ECM Battery Voltage | Kilometers to Empty

Reading the manual, and comparing its list of possible gauges with the one above, I noticed the following gauges that my MX did NOT find in my Tacoma:

Fuel Pressure (PSI) | EGR Flow % Error | Outside Ambient Air Temperature (oC)
Fuel Pressure (kPa) | Fuel Level % of Full | Absolute Throttle Position 2 %
Bank 1 Oxygen Sensor 1 Voltage | Evaporative Vapor Pressure (PSI) | Accelerator Pedal Position 2 %
Bank 2 Oxygen Sensor 1 Voltage | Evaporative Vapor Pressure (kPa) | Boost Pressure, Relative Pressure (PSI)
EGR Flow % | Outside Ambient Air Temperature (oF) | Boost Pressure, Relative Pressure (kPa)

Note that there are other gauges in the manual, but they are for Diesel engines and for MAP sensor vehicles, so I disregarded their omission from the ones detected by my UG.

Confirming the lack of “Fuel Level % of Full,” I noticed that in the “MENU/Fuel Menu/…/Level Sender Mode” area, I got the message, “No Fuel Sensor Found”. That means that I have to tell the unit every time I fill up (by holding down the “UP” button for 3 seconds when on the main display, or by going to “MENU/Fuel Menu/…/Fuel Fill Up” and report a fillup,) and that the display of “Fuel Level” is calculated, rather than detected by a sensor in the tank.

The next thing I checked was the list of eight “Manufacturer” or “M-Gauges that were pre-programmed. Here’s that list:

1 KPH (Vehicle Speed in Kilometers Per Hour) | 5 Transmission post Torque Converter Temperature
2 BAR INH (Barometric Pressure in Inches Hg) | 6 INJ MS (??)
3 AFR (Air/Fuel Ratio) | 7 LCK UP (Transmission Torque Converter Lock-Up State)
4 TC Pan (Transmission Pan Temperature) | 8 EVP PSI (Fuel Tank Evaporative Vapor Pressure)

It was a surprise to see #1 KPH and #2 BAR INH, since those are included in the “standard” gauges, and I don’t know how #3 AFR relates to the “AFR Commanded Ratio” standard gauge, but the two transmission temperature gauges (#4 and #5) were the reason I bought the UG.

Time to close this post, and resume with a question or two.

I guess the first question is “What is the definition of M-gauge #6, ‘INJ MS’?” I could guess that “INJ” means “Injector” and that “MS” means “milli-seconds,” but it’s not clear to me which injector this is measuring, and what knowing the time that an injector was “on” or “off” would do for me. Anybody? Anybody? Buehler?

My second question is really an issue. I assigned M-Gauge #7 to a displayable page on my UG, but when that page is shown, I get a blank, quickly followed by “Error” for this parameter. I assume that there’s something wrong in the definition of this gauge for my vehicle. The definition I see in my MX for this gauge is:

    M-Gauge | 7
Title | LCK UP (Transmission Torque Converter Lock-Up State)
    TDATA | 07E02182
    MATCH | 6182
    TCtrl | 92
    RPos | 1F01
    RCtrl | 21
    X | 0001
    / | 0001
    + | 0000
Output format | 00 (Displays "0" when the torque converter is unlocked and "1" when the TC is locked)
    AVE | 00
    Left/Right | 30

Searching TW, I see these exact parameters listed for LCK UP on an Ultra-Gauge MX, but always associated with a 2G model. So my assumption is that something needs to be changed to get this M-Gauge to display on a 3G Tacoma. There may be an issue with the MATCH parameter -- the screen shots I've seen on TW show two bytes (4 numbers,) but the M Gauge screen on my UltraGauge MX has room for 3 bytes (6 numbers.) I've tried making the MATCH say 006182 and 618200, but they both result in the Err on the display. I notice that the MATCH parameters for the Trans post-TC sensor and the Trans Pan sensor use 3 bytes (621628 and 621627, respectively.) Anybody? Anybody? Buehler?

If you are trying to get the tranny temps on it you have to change the coding. Yes it’s not very user friendly at all. I did get mine to work. As it comes from the factory it’s set for 2nd gen.

No, you do it all on the guage itself.

Mine did not come with a manual from the gb. Can the scan guage pull up the actual hours off the ecm? Also the trans temp? May need advice upon programing it.

1-20181005_191750.jpg 2-20181005_191809.jpg To set up the gauges, follow this path:
    MENU > Gauge/Page Menu ... > Select Gauge/Page > M Gauge Setup

I have a 17 TRD off road and used the pics I posted above to enter the transmission codes for the trans and the trans pan. took maybe 5mins

Ultra-Gauge manual is available here. Programming supplement is available here.

There are several "Time" gauges available: Trip Run Time, Time to Empty, Short Trip Run Time, and Run Time - General. I don't know whether those are read from the ECM (based on inputs to the Entune unit) or calculated inside the UG. Someone who has those gauges displayed on their UG (and some time to play) would have to see what happens when you change values on the Entune head.

is there a way to see tire pressure moniters like on scan guage?

Not that I know of -- TPMS data isn't listed as either a "standard" gauge, or given as a "manufacturer-specific" (M-Gaugue) in the documentation. Somewhere I read of people who were taking ScanGauge gauge definitions and converting them to a format that UltraGauges could be programmed to use, but that was quite awhile back.

I'm still waiting for someone to post a "Transmission Lock-Up" definition that works with UltraGauge and my 2016 2WD automatic...
