Why are you repeatedly pressing the pedal to begin with?

Sometimes like at a traffic light and you are 2 or 3 cars back. The cars in front are not getting up to speed the same as you, you have to let off the gas and sometimes continually tap it to maintain speed cars have set. Then when you get your opportunity to pass or speed up, you hit the pedal, engine screams, but you go no where. Like your just in neutral. I have experienced this many times. I just try to not put myself in those situations now that I know what it does.

My 2nd gens did that. Always wondered why it did that (possibly something to do with the torque converter?). You can avoid it by using S-modes and limiting the shifting to 3rd or 4th.

Exactly... but it shouldn’t do that. None of my other Toyota trucks did this

Edit: just bought a Pedal Commander and will see if it makes a difference in drivability

??? Why do I keep depressing the pedal ? LOL

Just went into the dealership today for my TSB appointment. That I scheduled it 2 weeks ago. When I thought finally they will update my truck. Apparently the dealership is going to give me the same crap all over again. Saying we going to have to test drive your truck. Like, seriously? Wow!

Dealership "maybe" installed software EG1811 instead. I guess.

It's happened to me. Made a u-turn with plenty of distance between me and oncoming traffic. Apply throttle...apply more throttle...apply even more throttle. Truck accelerates very slowly, then suddenly downshifts 2 gears, spins the tires since the road was wet, engages traction control and by that time traffic was right on my bumper.

I can't remember if that incident was before or after I had one of the TSBs applied...but I can tell you that it still does the same crap after it.

So I picked up my 2018 Pro last night, and asked the dealer to confirm if the TSBs had been completed prior to taking delivery. Apparently, I was the first person to ever ask such a thing, but they accommodated me. These are the correct Calibration IDs for the TSB being applied under Engine/Transmission right? Thanks.

did they put the sticker under the hood? That is part of the TSB requirements. Unless of course it came from the factory completely updated.

This is by far the best description of 3rd gen Tacoma performance. My 2018 feels exactly the same. Sometimes runs like a bat outta hell... other times like a parachute dragging behind.

I took my truck in to get an oil change and 125-18 performed on Tuesday. In my service request I used the exact language in the TSB about the engine idle surge when turning steering wheel, hoping to avoid any sort of back and forth with the service adviser. I let them know at drop off that it was under the emissions warranty, the SA got extremely testy with me and said if we can't duplicate the issue it's going to be a $145 diagnostic fee. I told her it was intermittent and if they couldn't duplicate I wasn't going to pay a $145 diagnostic fee. I politely let her know I'd like to speak to a manager, the manager took one look at what I was requesting and said "no charge for diagnostic here, this is emissions warranty 8 years / 80k - we'll get it done for you".

Below was what was included on the paperwork:

REPROGRAM ECM (PCM) ~|~ENGINE REPAIR GROUP *CUSTOMER STATES, ENGINE IDLE SURGES WITH STEERING INPUT. CUST WOULD LIKE TSB 125-18 PERFORMED. ~|~. ~|~39718 PERFORMED TSB TRANSMISSION UPDATE CODE EG1812 .4.

They performed the update. The buck/surge when you are too heavy on the gas (for me the issue was primarily if I shifted into 2nd gear early and then was too heavy on the throttle) is totally gone. It's really smoothed out the low end of the powerband. I have put about 200 miles on the truck since. I don't feel like it has more power, or torque, or anything like that, but it eliminated the bog / surge issue and I'm fairly certain it also eliminated the knocking sound I had under load as well when rolling low RPM's up a hill at high elevation (I live at 5,500 feet and regularly drive over mountain passes 10k+).

Anyway, a bit of a frustrating start to my visit with the initial SA but once I talked to the manager it was smooth sailing. Very happy with the update. FWIW my truck is a '16 DCSB 6MT with 40k miles.

It did not have anything on the sticker. I actually spoke to the Service Manager when I got there, and he made it sound like they just hooked it up and did any needed updates. Sounded like a very informal process, so not sure. But based on the CAL IDs it seems it was applied.

Anyone know the as-delivered Calibration ID for the 2019 yet?

Had this update done at Kearny Mesa Toyota a couple days ago. Rep I spoke to was very understanding and didn't give me any push back.

In my case there was a noticeable improvement in drive-ability. It used to feel kind of like the transmission had one set speed for each gear and the throttle would allow you to vaguely suggest a jump between those six speeds. Now the truck has a more reactive single kick down and a more natural responsiveness to moderate throttle inputs. The truck just seems to be in a more appropriate gear and actually care about driver inputs in general. That being said it's still no race car, just much more livable.

have you heard of the Cruisin USA or Exotica games? They are racing arcade games. the joke is that in the game, you double tap the gas pedal to trigger the boost; which is the exact opposite of what happens when you double tap the gas in the tacoma......I know it was apparrently only funny to me, LOL. oh well.

I’m not reading 140 pages for the answer...I had this TSB performed at my last service and have since noticed a pretty dramatic reduction in gas mileage....anyone else see similar reduction in fuel efficiency?
