Howdy all, I'm chomping at the bit to tell East Coast to build and ship my new 3rd member, but still stressing over which gear ratio to go with???

I was about to pull the trigger on 4.56's, then did some calculating. I don't rock crawl, some inclines, but not rock crawling, mainly mud and sand. And I want to also be able to drive the truck on the interstate, not have to trailer it to get to trails. In mud and sand, OEM gears are fine, on inclines could use help for sure!

Occasionally I pull a trailer with the Tacoma, 9 times outta 10 I use the F150 though.

I did some calculating, on paper it looks like driving on the interstate or putting around town with 4.56's will put the RPM's waaaay higher than OEM.

Worried about, number one, running the engine at higher RPM's all the time, number two, (not as much, but still a factor since I'm already getting 200 miles per tank) worried running high RPM's will drag my gas millage under 10MPG. Lol, only 4 five gallon gas cans fit between the OEM roof rack and can be strapped down, lol!

Are my calculations off? Am I missing something?

Anyone else running 4.29's and can share experience?

Thanks guys, I'm really wanting to get her regeared asap!

I run 4.88s with 35s, RPMs are higher but the power on the street is back to stock almost

On the interstate, to run at highway speeds 70-80 in the real world are the RPM's really that high? Running 4.88's, did your gas millage plummet like math says it should?

Did yours come with 4.10's or did you change them? What trans. You running?

    5 Spd, auto, with 265/65/17 and 4.10's should run like 2300 RPM's

Running 80 it's around 2800 but I'm loaded down with bumpers, skids, tools, cage, partial exo, and spare parts. MPG is probably around 11-12 I dont pay much attention because it's not a daily.

My buddy with 35s and a 6 inch lift runs the same gears and loves it. Other buddy is setup with skids and bumpers on his 201u 4runner with 33s and 4.88s and its nice. I'm only on 3 inches so drag isnt as bad as a 6 inch

To run 35'S and 3" lift, did you have to cut a bunch or just axe the fender flares?

    I have full bumpers/skids/bed rack/tent, 35s and 4.56s

At 60, I think my rpms are around 2200 (I actually cant remember, havent driven in a little while and paying attention). Also my speedo is off by 7-8mph.

I get 200 miles to a tank of gas.

For what it’s worth, I’m running 4.56s with 35’s (nitto trail grapplers) and my ratios are closer to your 4.29 math on the notepad above. :notsure:
