So I put on some durartracs on over the weekend and I not happy with how the truck is handling the road and I am getting much more road noise that I expected. Bumps are harsh and the ride is extremely stiff. I can feel small bumps and the sidewall just feel really stiff. I have a 2017 TRD Pro and I have been running stock tires since the I bought the truck a couple of months ago(pre-owned). I have this will be my 4th Tacoma and my last truck I had an 05 Taco with a leveling kit and rode duratracs and loved them. Load Range C on on all of them. I have also had BF GoodRich Mud TA, and ALL Terrain KO but always preferred the Goodyear DuraTracs for the New England snow, Ice etc.

Anyhow, I am wondering if anyone has had this same experience and if there is a solution. I am not counting out going to another tire and I would like to keep it with something that looks good and is functional like a AT or AT Hybrid. I am not looking to go up or down a size, switch wheels or make any additional mods at this time.

    Thanks everyone in advance.

What’s the tire pressure? What’s the load range of the tire?

Try lowering to 32-34psi ,what tire size. If you went with a bigger tire , more weight.

Yeah that is a plus size tire over stock, most likely what you are seeing. You will get used to it. Changing anything from stock will change the characteristics of the ride.

I have always has plus sized tires on my trucks with lifts and never have I noticed such a drastic stiffness is changing tires. Usually its the opposite where I am feeling a much more positive effect other than fuel consumption.

I had 265/75r16 load C DuraTracs once upon a time. I got 45k fun filled miles, sold 'em to someone else who got another 25k.

    They rode rough.

Had one that never would balance

Had to run 35+ psi to get them to NOT have flat spots

    Got louder as we went.

    Did "OK" in snow.

Did OK for gas mileage, not outstanding, but OK.

Went to load E, 285/75r16 Cooper STT PRO's.

    Slightly less noise.

    MUCH better ride.

    Balance well

Lost a little gas mpg's, but found a better tire.

Could just be that we have had a ton of snow and the roads are crap up here already this year. Try nocking down to 35 all around and give that a go. The duratracs in C load are way better than most of the other tires I've had over the years

    The DuraTrac? or the Cooper?

    10 ply rated = "E rated".

No such thing as a TRUE 10 ply street tire....Just rating....

Load range C (Duratrac's) NOT 10 ply rated

I agree I have always been happy with these tires previously but I am starting to question myself since my last truck had more weight with a cap, and was setup a little differently. I was spoiled with the soft, quiet really nice feeling of the TRD pro with stock tires. I want the best of both worlds and dont want to sacrifice. I like to have a good capable tires for the snow and ice in new england.

Don't judge ANY aggressive tire noise level when new. The DuraTracs aren't screamers.....at first......but get WAY louder as they go. STT PRO's get a little bit louder as they wear, but noise AND wear can be helped a ton by frequent rotation. I do 'em at 4K miles. As a rule of thumb, AT or hybrid tires USUALLY are "quieter". But no broad strokes "ALL the time/EVERY time" answer to that question.

My WORN DuraTrac's were incredibly loud.

Ride and noise level were beyond acceptable by 35k

2nd set of STT PRO's. (48k on first set/@ 24k on second set)

Both ON and OFF road goes to STT PRO's by a huge margin.

I bet it is just a heavier tire than what was on there. The Tacoma is a relatively light truck, so the added weight is noticeable.

    Workin' on it....
I'm running the exact same tire, size and load range on my second gen.....not sure why this batch of tires is different for you if you've run them before. For what its worth I'd lower your tire pressure a bit. I've got about 30k miles on my Duratracs right now and don't find them obnoxiously loud.

I went with Duratracs because they are one of the few tires that are mountain snowflake rated.....not many options out there when that is one of the requirements.

There seems to be a high rate of problems with DuraTracs not balancing well. Once they do, great tire. If they DON'T balance, stay after dealer/goodyear until they ARE right. There's a pretty extensive history on out-of-round-ness/wont balance with the DuraTracs. Beat that and they're good tires. I was mostly pleased with mud...VERY pleased in rocks, Not thrilled in sand.

Out of 4, I got one reject and one that had to be balanced every 10k.

Same truck, same conditions, no issues with any of the Coopers.
