Today I ordered 4 tires, an install to wheels already in my possession, plus aftermarket TPMS, from a tire chain. The guy who originally helped me said he wasn't sure if my 17 taco TRD sport would support aftermarket sensors, and that he would research it and call me back with an answer. I ended up closing the sale with a different person who said the aftermarket sensors should be fine. The original kid called me back later and mentioned hat they WOULDN'T be compatible with the truck.

Do I need to get OEM TPMS for my winter set? Anyone have any success with any after market brands?

I will be using the Denso sensors that were mentioned above. As mentioned they are the same as OEM. I will also be using the ATEQ Quickset tool. It will read the current sensors stored in the truck and then allows another set to be entered into the tool. Then it allows either set to be uploaded to the ECM.

I wouldn't invest in TPMS Sensors for a set of winter tires

For anyone still following - it turns out that my local dealership is price gouging HARD. I found another semi-local Toyota that sold me OEM steelie sensors + mount kits, and 4x tacoma OEM steels for about 45% less than my current - parts dept basically told me they sell parts at cost + 10% to keep business coming. At that rate I was happy to buy through Toyota, and happy to have their service department assemble + mount wheels and reprogram the sensors. One day I'll look into getting my own tool, but for now, I don't have the time to mess with it.

If anyone's in the market for this stuff, shop around at local toyotas, or check out OEM toyota parts online. Apparently toyota parent company uses one centralized parts marketplace, and each store has its own store/listings, making it easy to get OEM parts at varying prices/locations depending on how low each dealership wants to go. They ship too.

All in all, I'm in for around $1200 for steels, tires, sensors, plus any labor assembling and mounting. Can't go wrong.

I bought my tpms sensors from DTD. They are universal and fit both alloy and steel wheels. I had them in after market steel wheels and swapped them out to a set of Tacoma Sport wheels with no problems.

So I installed my winter tires today with Denso sensors. I used the Ateq Quickest which allowed me to pull the oem sensor codes from the computer. Then I entered the codes that were printed on the Denso sensors. Now both sets of codes are stored in the Quickset and I can switch between winter or summer.

Also the Denso sensors did not to be activated. One I started driving the computer was able to connect to them. Overall it was very easy.

Looks to me like the Denso Sensors are actually made by Pacific Industrial which is the company that makes the OEM sensors. So they are in fact OEM sensors with the Denso name and part number on the box.

That is correct, they are the same as the OEM sensors. Saves a little money over buying them from Toyota.
