Using the 400w bed plug as a home generator?

    Morning

During the buying process, the Salesperson made a comment about using the plug in the bed as a home generator. Since a generator is just an engine with some components to convert the energy into wattage, in my mind I pictured one of those large round, clothes dryer-type plugs but didn't ask more questions.

In any case, seeing as it's a regular plug, any tips on how to use this for my home should I need to? I have a home generator anyway, but curious. I'm guessing I have to plug in an extension cord, run it into the house from the back of the Tacoma, plug into it a power surge strip and then maybe it will run my fridge?

Thanks in advance for the help. I tried a search to no avail.

Your sales person was just trying to make a sale, either with ignorance or deceit. It's a 400w plug. Your fridge is 700 to 1000 watts+ running and needs at least a 2000 watt generator to start up.

You might be able to run a coffee pot on that.
I’ve plugged a sawzall into it to cut something in a pinch. It just about handles that.

LOL! That's hilarious. So 50/50 on coffee. Thanks. Thinking about it, I regular car engine SHOULD be able to power an entire house if a small little engine in a generator can, no?

More like a marketing item lol, I've charged my phone sleeping in the bed that's about it. It would be more useful inside the truck

I used the 400W outlet on my FJ Cruiser to run my home's sump pump during a storm. Probably can't handle any more than that.

    Lots of sail boat fuel
    The engine can .

But keep following this down the rabbit hole to find out how generators work and you'll find your answer.

Yes. If the engine was attached to a generator. But it’s not.

A house generator needs anywhere from 7500 to 14000 watts. A generator that size would be about 3x3 to 4x5 we sell them. You can put a generator that big into the tacoma but would rather just buy a dedicated one for the house.

You should get a water-powered backup pump and then you'll never have to worry.

And don't forget it's 400w when the truck is NOT RUNNING 100w when it IS running. At first this made no sense to me but now I understand why.
