TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

I have a level 10 torque converter

 

Scratch built one or yours overhauled? What changed performance wise with your truck after install?

 

It doesn't get any more definitive than this, especially when it comes to four month old promises...

They are built from scratch. All stall converters usually are if it is a legitimate company backing it.

Balls to the wall performance. The converter is usually constructed to flash up to the engines powerband and upon shifting you dont drop off RPM like with a stock level torque converter, rather stay within the powerband. Cruising performance remains similar, it only affects you when you give the go pedal some more juice. There is a lot more to it, and STR comes in to play, but that is the basics of it.

This mod is strictly for performance but if you offroad I strongly advise you against this mod as the sudden RPM flash can and usually is violent. Something you DON'T want while rock crawling or even desert running.

Another thing to note is due to the fact that you are allowing slippage up to a certain RPM to allow the converter to flash up, there will be a lot more heat generation. Transmission cooling temperature is of the utmost importance, and something like Roost's CSF radiator mod would almost be mandatory to do, or a larger independent trans cooler, or both. Transmission temperature monitoring is recommended as well to ensure you do not exceed dangerously high temperatures during operation. Some additional wear can be expected on the clutch packs as well, but given that we have a much more well constructed transmission over one built by GM I wouldn't worry about that too much, unless you have already high mileage and dont do regular maintenance on your tranny fluid.

Put it to you this way, it is a mod commonly done by the muscle car community, so results will be similar to muscle car performance (e.g. drag racing).

 

Sent my datalogs to Scott. He responded this morning and said everything looks great. My air flow was only 258g/s. Elevation sucks. He said it looks good to go down a couple pulley sizes. I didn't even ask or bring it up. Guess that is his way of saying i need more power. So, next step. 2.7 or 2.6? Want the best dependability for what I have in supporting mods. Reccomendations?

 

Go 2.5 then you dont need to fuss with the tensioner stop to make the belt fit correctly.

 

Are you manual or auto?

If you are either you will require either an upgraded clutch or a Ratiotek shift kit to speed up shift time.

 

I've been a year of abusive driving and my stock clutch is still holding up. Smoked it a couple times but you can get by for a bit without upgrading. I know it'll be needed eventually though.

 

2.7 will be safe for all but the the lowest altitudes and temperatures. My injector duty cycle was 93% with a 2.7 at 1000ft elevation and 80's temperatures.

A 2.6 may work great for where you are but you may have to be carefull if you go to lower altitudes unless you install larger injectors.

2.5 with 61lb injectors is awesome.

 

Automatic. Have about 5k miles on a used one thst had 45k on it and I put a transgo shift kit in the valvebody at that time. I am at 4400 feet here in Idaho, but my travels take me much higher often and down to about 2200 feet at the lowest often. Would love to feel the truck at anything under 1000 feet. I have my old trans that I am thinking about rebuilding and doing the ratiotek. Also thinking about just pulling the valve body and putting the ratiotek in it to just test the difference. Would love to go 2.5 right off the at but thinking 2.7 would be smarter. Baby steps. And cost. Just got my CSF radiator and ordered hammer hangers also. And still need to re do my rear suspension again. Lol too many projects. Thank you all for you input and your knowledge! I have learned so much on this thread.

 

I want to and need to convert my rear shackles out to hammer hangers as well. One of the few pending projects I have put off for a while now.

I've debated doing that for a while...but I'm starting to lean towards wanting to upgrade the 4.0 internals first so they can handle 400+ HP
