Oh. Ok. I just wondered because my mom had a Nikon D80 kit and it didn't have filters. Her pictures always looked ok.

Higher quality glass, and interchgability with all lenses. I have 5 different lense sizes/diameters so that means different size filters for each. I think the least I’ve spent on a filter was about $75.00, which adds up when you’re looking at 3 filters per lense on average. Circular filters are helpful when you’re using a hood to counteract lense flair. Since I shoot mostly landscapes and outdoors I usually run a filter or filters and a hood combo.

I suppose they’re not absolutely necessary, but very helpful to work with the light. I don’t make any money from my photography, I just got into it this last summer. I just want my photography to be on the same level as a pro’s. When I get into a hobby I tend to go all out, and turn it up to 11.

Ahh the interchangeability would be nice indeed. I’ve only got 2 lenses but they’re not the same diameter so I would have to buy another filter. I only have a cheap filter for my 55mm lens anyways though and that’s the main lens I shoot. Hoping to get a 35mm 1.4 sigma art for Christmas. Then I’ll invest in better filters for it

I use them anytime the situation warrants or I want an effect in the photo.

Easy to change or add different filters together for a combined effect. If using a graduated filter for a sunset then you can move the filter to align with the horizon. Most square filter holders can hold at least 3 filters at once. With a screw on filter you're limited to where the graduation is at on the filter.

Edit: Wade also makes a good point about the different filter sizes for different lenses. Instead of buying a filter for each lens you just have to buy a new adapter ring.

My cheap ND filters have 3 different stops and can all screw in to each other which is nice. But again they’re cheap. But they do work for my experience level. If my 35mm ends up being a different diamater then I’ll invest in some new rectangular/square ones that are nice. But that will have to wait until after I get my homebrew setup bought

Soooo these square filters you speak of? What are those called exactly? I tried googling them but got filters for cameras from the 40s.

ND (neutral density) or polarized. Just add filter at the end of either
