3rd Gen Gear Selection - Tuning

We are looking to add gears to our test truck to develop gear specific tune options, and would like to know what is the most popular gear that people have chosen.

 

Ovtune, I suggest u gear up starting 4.56 and then work ur way up! Thats the only way ull be able to "develop gearspecific tune options"

I've had 4.88 gears with 33" tires for about a year now and had OVTuning since June 2017. 2100 RPM at 75mph is a good spot for me. I don't think I'd want 5.29 gears only to be screaming in the 85mph zones on the highways.

 

I have 4.88s, 255/80/16s (33.3), 70 mph has a RPM of 2080. I am glad I went 4.88s since I noticed a big drop in mpg with anything above 70mph. I get 17-17.5 mpg at 70. The truck loves anything at 65 or less since it is running between 1600 to 1900 rpm.

 

Hey they don’t have a 4.56 option but some of us have swapped the 4.30s into the automatics to match up with the 33s.

 

4.88’s with 265/70/17.

I’m on 4.88’s, 04B13/1.05 93MA, manual trans, running 35’s, 600 pounds of armor, and am getting 15-16 mpg on the hwy at 70mph/2400rpm. 6th gear still pulls, not great, but it’ll pull enough to pass without a downshift. Would love to see a 4.88 specific tune.

@OVTune i have 4.88s with 35s and just some minor added weight. I am dongled on 04B04 with 1.04r although thinking about going back to just the TSB cause the shifting has gotten bad again. I do a daily 10 mile hill at 6% grade and it’s either rev 3rd or do the shift dance so if you need someone to test let me know.

 

I voted 5.29. I am stock gear and 265/70-17 now. Once I do my lift I will be on 285/75-17 and 5.29. Running aluminum front bumper, full skids including gas tank. High clearance steel rear bumper. Mobtown full plate sliders. I also carry a full size spare and have another run to eventually have 2 spares to carry. I live at about 3500’ elevation and work at sea level. It’s all of 16 mile drive

 

I am running 4.88's on 285/75/17 (34") Running 1.03 91oct and truck runs great. Will hold 6th and pull a little on small grades! Have some decent weight on the truck,SSO front winch bumber and Smitty winch, RTT, Mobtown full steal skids, Fuel skid also, lots of other little goodies. 1.04 didnt work well with my setup had the bad clunk coming to a stop real bad. I love the throttle tip in on 1.03. I wouldn't go 5.29's on 33" or less. Cant wait for all the goodness coming with 1.05 and custom tuning!

 

I think 4.88 is the most common aftermarket ratio because it's the most available. I wanted slightly larger tires, so I bought 285/75-16s (~33s). With stock gears (AT) it was sluggish, so I thought I'd regear to 4.56 only to find out the closest I could get was 4.88. I rode the 4.88/33s setup for only about 900 miles before I conceded that it was too high strung on the freeway. I went to 315/75-16 (35s) and my shift points went back to a stock feel and mileage came back up closer to stock as well.
Current setup feels pretty much like I remember how the truck drove bone stock.

 

Really? I love my 4.88’s and 32’s at 75. Feels perfect.

 

I liked that setup around town and on hills in top gear, but it dropped about 3 mpgs on the freeway.

 

4.88's with 1.04 87 octane tune (04B03). I'm the odd one out because I run STOCK tires. Wanted torque for pulling my 1700 lb camper. 75 mph is 2400 rpm, 200 rpm increment decrease per 5 mph decrease. Perfect compared to stock gearing and no tune. Average 20 mpg city/highway not towing and 17 mpg towing (round trip). Base elevation 6000 ft. Towing elevation 11000 plus. Dongel-less and ready! Bring it!

 

5.29 recently was released so I image not too many have it. Nitro gears seems recommend it vs 4.88 for anyone that has plans go larger than 33s

 

Yeah, they recommended 33s to me as max size as a way to fix the gear hunting on the freeway. I don't believe they're considering fuel mileage tho.

 

Need a 5.29 test truck? I volunteer myself as sacrifice.

Toyota OEM offers a 4.56:1 ratio to fit both differentials that the Tacoma uses. They are a global market part typically used in Parado and Hilux drivetrains. The part numbers from Toyota are floating around here on the forum originally provided to us by @Jeff Lange .

 

i had a 59 chevy with a 348 3 two barrels, i put a 4:56 posi traction 3rd member in it and that was low enough for that . i just want to know how to get a true posi traction rear end in my 2 WD 16.
also when you all re gear how do you adjust the speedometer?
