My 5 days of hunting was interrupted for various reasons. Only got to still hunt 3 times. One evening hunt had a nice shooter (probably 19 inches wide symmetrical 8 point) came out 150 yards away, just three minutes past shooting light :bananadead: So he lives for another day.

Got to hear some dogs behind the house, shot a coyote slipping them on Thursday and Saturday shot one in my front yard while dogs were pushing him. Yes, these are actually decent deer dogs (most days) but the coyotes are so bad in my area. I'm not a huge deer dog fan and don't hunt with a club but I'll step out on the property when I know the dogs are working towards my land and listen to a handheld radio

TL;DR: I'm probably bad at deer hunting

Lady luck packed her bags and left me all alone from Friday to Sunday  Lots of sitting hours and several stalking miles in...

Friday morning low of 28 and Sunday's high of 59, those are the extreme's of the weekend. Temps stayed in between those.

Never saw the bigger older deer with funny antlers again, after last Saturday. He was 100% in the rut.
Friday around 8:30am, got a smaller and younger buck to walk right in front of me at 20 yards with The Can. Blaming the gun's fault here because I was dead on behind the shoulder blade, never saw bullet impact to the deer or behind it or blood, sure as shit jumped like he was shot! Tracked his path for well over 150yds and a double lung/heart shot at that range would've decimated his insides. Followed the hoof prints without any blood at all, until I reached the end of the property. No way I could've missed that deer doing all I could, wasn't even shaking or "buck fever", just saw him as meat. Still kick myself for this and really hope I didn't just injure him.
Friday early afternoon, decided I had stirred up the woods enough on that side after the one shot and stalking the known bedding area without seeing any more deer. Walked up behind the gf's mother's house where there was more old growth hardwood timber and a lot less scrub and ground cover. 100yds from the house into woods I hit The Can one time. Jumped a doe out of one of 3 briar thickets for that entire side of the 15 acre lot, go figure. Stopped her with my worst human-sounding bleat LOL! Play the typical stand-off game for 10 minutes. Then the damn dog comes trotting up into the woods behind me and spooked her :frusty::infantry: !!!!I went home.
Rain moved in Friday late night and stayed until 1pm Saturday. I dicked around at home and kept to the couch that day.
Sunday. Incredibly foggy morning. Got to the property at about 6:30am. Plenty of darkness still and the fog made it hard to see more than 50', good for me and the deer. This is where I made my mistake. I hunted the more open standing hardwood side. Found a 3-way roadbed to relax at 7:15, dripped a little Tinks, found a down tree to sit in, and waited. Fog starts to lift out the holler and then I see what must be all the deer in the area. ON THE OTHER FREAKING SCRUB BUSH AND BRIAR THICK HILLSIDE WHERE MOVEMENT IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. So I sit there, watching 2 bucks chase does through my binos for about 30 minutes, then decide to move up the hillside and work my around toward behind the gf's mom's house, eventually down to the truck (temps starting to rise rapidly and needed to shed layers), it was close to 11 at this point. I had been there for long enough with no movement and no response to calls. Couldn't trust the AK or myself to shoot that far with irons.
Jumped that same doe again. Different briar thicket this time. At least I'm 2/2 on where she is during noontime if I wanna shoot a doe :D

Not a thing to show for Modern Gun season. Save a few empty 7.62x39 brass in the woods. Never truly sighted my WASR for hunt precision, my fault. Can I blame the gun? Sure thing! Was it probably me rushing the shots since I was shooting spooked deer and I had been spotted? Also yes :D

Looks like I'm buying a muzzleloader for Dec 8th-16th. Just can't use my longbow without a stand or tall blind, bow's gotta be near perfect vertical to shoot properly. Not risking a bad shot into the guts, I don't consider that conservation or ethical. This spring I'll put in a ladder stand and maybe build a ground blind for the woman/kids/self.

Sorry for the long winded post. I like telling stories, even if they make me look bad, they're the truth.

What the heck, only six? Everyone knows Santa uses eight. Here is a photo from 2011 when I filled the freezer in one day. Santa had to make other arrangements that year.

    Yea, I was lucky I didn't get bit. ;)
It was a head shot, entry from the back. Dropped her good, but kind of made a mess.

8 inches of snow overnight,22 degrees and NW wind at 14 mph...sounds like hunting weather. Been in stand 20 minuets and have seen 6 does so far. My neighbor was gracious enough to leave 8 acres of standing beans and I’m 40 yards off of them.3DEE3EF4-C408-43FF-B470-FBC9491115FF.jpg

not sure what state ur in but East of Blue Ridge Mtns. in VA is legal to run dogs. ive done it often but my favorite is beagles. they move them but not near as fast as hounds.and the Music is a beautiful thing. frosty mornin, 4 or 5 beagles workin the hollows, and i could sit there for ever!!

Eastern NC. Perfectly legal to run them in most counties here. I was apart of the club one year but just enjoy still hunting more. Most of the dogs they use are walkers, blue ticks and long legged beagles. The blocks that are ran are around 800-1200 acres with roads separating each block, so it's plenty of room for the dogs to move. It is a adrenaline rush when the dogs are barking every breath headed your way. Also, no restrictions on rifles/shotguns/magazine capacity.
