Cab Mount Chop - Food for thought?

Somewhat yes, i got worked up last night after some of the posts as beng just a blue collar old welder body man they most deffinately seemed uppity. I don’t handle uppity very well but tried hard to retain a civil tone with my response. Overall this thread has brought some interesting points to light and apparently the third gen frame ismade out of stronger steel than a first or second gen. I can tell ya first hand the steel in a second gen isn’t Nything special

I will say I miss my 2nd gen for more reasons then 1. I personally don’t think that plating the 3rd gen will decrease the strength at all. The cabmount is beefy as all hell. I want to know why they made it so much bigger on these trucks. Doubt it’s to do with the tire entering the cab

Both vids show the cab mount stopping the wheel.

 

I figured out when we were discussing the strength differences between the cab mount and the 3/16 plate i use. I was confused and didn’t understand until later that a: y’all were talking about third gens and b: there was a difference in the steel between a second and third gen so what is the difference because I can tell ya the second gen steel isn’t anything special

 

I know, but doesn’t explain why the cab mount is so much larger on the 3rd gens.

So you’re an engineer. I understand the strength of the mount might be compromised with the chop/plate but wouldn’t the angle change also affect the way the tire is pushed away from the cab?

Keep in mind I’m still going to do mine, but I’ll be LT with 35s and sliders when it’s so I might have a little more to worry about if I get into that accident

 

Ill tell you what our 3rd gens have one hell of an airbag system. lol.

 

That's cool. I am going to write a post a bit later that will cause most of you to question crash tests in general. I do.

The difference is the strength of steel a how they made it stronger. Much stronger like 4x stronger. How they did it was different forming process and steel recipe.

I get that part now. That was part of the confusion in our discussion. I have never worked on any third gen stuff yet so i was thinking 2nd gen the whole time you were talking 3rd gen. Whew, i was referring to the steel in the 2nd gen cab mounts not being as strong as the materials I use to plate and box them.

 

3rd gen is mild steel too. No one can find anything to say different. If the frame was 4x stronger Toyota would be all over that with marketing.
