Guessing here on the reason for beefing up the mount but here is my 2 cents...

The small overlap crash test is especially brutal because the frame rails cannot be used to absorb the energy like in the older moderate overlap crash test. In the small overlap all of the energy must be absorbed buy the outer structure of the vehicle meaning that things like the cab mount need to be strenghtened to absorb the crash.

Note that 2nd gen crash would have covered something like 50% of the front of the truck to absorb the impact where the 3rd gen needed to absorb the same energy with only the outer 1/2 of the structure.

    Built Tough
The new 2016 Tacoma was partly developed by the Toyota engineering team at Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Starting with the frame, they added high strength steel to help enhance rigidity and overall strength. Ultra-high strength steel was integrated into the body shell using a new hot stamping process that reduces weight.
To create a truck to meet the needs of active drivers on a variety of tamed and untamed surfaces, the suspension was fine-tuned to help deliver a smoother on-road ride, while making it even more capable off-road.

This says they added high strength steel. It doesn't say how much or where. I'm guessing it's a small amount in key places like cross-members

Well, on your advice I just did what you suggested, and, mostly, all the actual information I can find that discusses the safety of a CMC seems to be contained in this exact thread. Maybe I don’t know how it all works after all.

In my defence, aside from somehow creating a thread you cannot look away from for whatever reason, it turns out this thread may be the best resource yet on the subject, or at least the most searchable.....for what that’s worth. Perhaps that is it’s purpose.

If you have other threads or websites with more or better info on cab-mount chop safety, please link them here. That would be welcomed and constructive.

If you have chopped your truck and have some worry that the info contained here, that is now searchable, has somehow devalued it’s resale value in the minds of people who have browsed this info, I apologize. Certainly if I was buying your truck, I’d be looking for a discount due to the frame chop.

Someone back a few pages posted a false color chart of the various strength steel and where it was located.

I'm looking for a frame pic I saw last night similar to this, the 5th gen 4Runner frame.
    151081d1427434861-5th-gen-body-mount-chop-frame.jpg
The one I saw last night was with this one!
The body mounts here ( same as our cab mounts) are 780 and the Tacoma was same if I recall.

I'll keep looking. I would think the crossmembers would be softer than the rest to allow some side to side flex.
