What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Changed the gear oil in both front and rear diffs. Still waiting on the MT-90 to show up so I can do the trans and t-case. Used Redline 75w90 GL5 stuff for the diffs. Then I did the washer bottle relocation since my new washer bottle showed up. Had to relocate the cruise control module forward about an inch to make room. I probably could have squeezed the new bottle in there if I really tried. Works good and no more cracked washer bottle, also much safer location for it.

 

Hah, looks like my test load of dirt after installing the OME suspension...

There is still one on Craigslist in Northern CA listed for $2500. Claimed that it is rebuilt. I would buy a new one for the price difference, especially since URD has them on sale (until midnight) for $3570.

 

Ordered Icon Stage 2 Kit Looking forward to when that arrives in the future. In the meantime.. Time to pain the CBI Rock Rails Tues/Weds!

 

So I did some work today and drained the coolant. Started making bubbling noises in the dash when driving so I immediately turned around and tried to fix it. It’s still doing it after pumping the hose and revving it up.

I need to put it on a incline but is it at all bad to drive it like this? I thought I’ve heard before that it could make it overheat but I’m not sure...

 

Running it while low on coolant can overheat it. Did you do the thermostat by chance?

 

It’s not low. It has air in the system and I couldn’t get it all out because my driveway is flat.

I drained the radiator so I could get the fan shroud out.

EDIT: To clarify I put everything in that I took out. Some of it had to go into the overflow because the air was taking up too much room and it wouldn’t all go back in.

 

If it's just a little bit of air because you couldn't quite get that last little bit out than id imagine it's okay temporarily, without pushing her too hard. I'd be paranoid though lol

Ok, that's not bad, mine should be rebuilt by the next buyer, I have no service history, just changed the oil in it myself since I've owned it but it doesn't seem to have excessive play in the bearing or make odd noises.

It's simply air in the heater core, make sure you keep the overflow topped off and the air will work itself out, make sure your overflow doesn't go dry though.

 

Why you want to get rid of it? Be tempting for me on my single cab haha

 

I could use the money, it's on a 4runner that is a project that I'll be selling once I replace the intake manifold assembly and the fuel injector seals. I think in my area they're worth more split apart, although the 4runner is fun in AWD mode with the S/C.
It has 200K miles on it with an unknown service history, it's on a'99 4runner that lived in the rust belt all it's life and the oil drain plug was stuck in it when I removed it to change the oil. Oil was in decent condition but the ceramic (?) paint on the S/C itself is chipping, I put about 1200 miles on the 4runner since I bought it and the S/C hasn't given me any issues other than pinging before I replaced the knock sensor, however I haven't run it since then because I need to replace the injector seals, I just put everything back together and haven't had time to fool with anything.

 

Gotcha. Sounds similar to the I bought. Coating on mine is stripping away too.

I'd be interested in it for the right price.

So, when I changed my timing belt and water pump, one of the things I (obviously) had to do was to drain and refill the radiator. I ended up using one of these funnels which made the job way easier and meant that I could get it totally full.

Essentially what it allows you to do is to fill up the funnel and then drain into the radiator, while keeping "extra" in the funnel. That means that as it burps out (as you run the engine), that the extra in the funnel flows down into the radiator. When no more bubbles, the funnel has a "closure" that allows you to take it off without spilling anything.

Works a charm!

Well yes and no, but that's also a ridiculous number for a 3.4 V6, that number would be more acceptable for a 1.2L 3cyl. As you'll find out as you keep reading it was wrong anyway, the 5VZ wasn't that sad thankfully

 

Thanks for the link. Just ordered one. My truck has green coolant in it now from the previous owner after a radiator replacement. I'm going to drain and refill with Zerex G05.

Hard to tell from here but it seemed like it was coming from the pump still as you moved the phone around.

 

well as you moved the phone over toward the PS pump it got much louder and over towards the Alt where the WP is it was not a loud...

 

Where about did you go? I'm considering going up to cut one.

 

I don't know if this would work but it would be easy to try. Take the belt off the power steering pump, and with the engine off, use an air rachet to turn the power steering pump. See if the sound is similar, and if it quits after running it a while.
