Blew the TRD decal off the bed!

hey guys, need some advice. I washed my truck 3 days ago and the pressure washer got under the TRD decal on the bed side and it came off partially, so I just blew the whole thing off. It left a sticky residue from the adhesive part of the decal. My question is, what is the best way to get it off without damaging the paint? I've always used running alcohol to get adhesive off windows and such, but that seems like it might be rough on the paint! Any advice / help is appreciated.

 

Goo-gone, WD-40, magic eraser pad, heat, any / all the above, find what works for you

 

I used 3M industrial Adhesive removed on my paint when i bought the truck and the paint is fine

Jimbo's become quite the master at this kind of thing. I would think that rubbing alcohol would be fine as well. Maybe some acetone but @PyritePirateBill would be better to answer if acetone would work.

Some people say don't use goof off, some say don't use goo gone, some people say use acetone but don't leave it on very long. My personal preference is go to a local body shop. They have chemicals that are specifically formulated to remove sticker residue and not hurt the paint. I recently bought a car with a hideous racing stripe on it. I peeled it off and there was glue left. My buddy at the body shop came out with a rag and some spray stuff and had it done in a few minutes and said, "have a nice day".

 

My advise would be to use caution with a pressure washer in the future. You might lose more than decals.

Plain old mineral spirits. Then of course wash and wax the area affected, or the whole fender.

I’d stay away from acetone. Try something less aggressive e.g., mineral spirits. You may want to try one of the “space age polymer” auto wax/cleaners.

 

Good suggestion on the mineral spirits. Yeah I tagged Bill because he's a paint and body guy so he would know better than I would.

 

Don’t use sand paper!

 

DO NOT use GOOF OFF. This melts the paint (it is acetone based). Some folks get away with it if it isn't on the paint for very long.

Feel free to use GOO GONE. This is the citrus based one. People use it all the time and it is safe and recommended for this application.

Be careful what you buy! More than one person has made the mistake of confusing the two similarly named products and trashed their paint...

Clay bar. Get as much off as you can. Polish off the rest.

Acetone can eat thru the clearcoat. 3m general adhesive cleaner is best

 

WD40, forget all that other stuff

 

Key think is you don’t want to dissolve / sand / or chemically eat away the sticky mess, as logical as it might first seem.

You want to use an oily, slippery, lubricant to rub under and around the mess, which will make the glue not only no longer stick to the paint but also prevent damage to the paint / clearcoat.

I’ve used wd40 (I know I know, it’s not a lubricant) and good gone (citrus smelling one) in the past for all my emblems badges and stickers. Then a quick hand polish with compound / wax to finish.
