I got my truck back this evening. The dealer loaned me a new Tacoma to drive while they worked on my truck. When I picked my truck up, the "bill" showed something about the rack and pinion steering. I asked about it and the dealer said they found a leak and replaced it while they were replacing the transmission. The total "bill" was a little over $5,600. I paid zero with my Toyota extended warranty. What a pleasant experience.

I would lose my shit if they told me I needed a transmission replacement and it’s covered under warranty and they did this shit.

Edit: read the first few posts.

    Glad things turned out well!

It does seem like a professional corporation like Toyota should know about the warranty. Seems like if OP didn’t remember to say something about it he would have been writing a big check.

Nice! Glad it worked out for you!

I'm coming late to this discussion but wanted to say how a local Toyota dealer tried to screw me. My daughter's 2001 RAV4 with at the time, 140K on it, actually started "hopping" and acting like I hit the brakes when driving. I took it to the dealer who gave it a very quick look and said the trans was shot and they could put a new one in for $5,000. I balked and took it home, trying to think of a "plan B'. I just started a new job and noticed an AAMCO transmission place about two blocks from my job. I drove her car there and went in and described what I had and what it was doing. I also kinda recognized him from about 35 years ago. My father and his father were both in the automotive business and knew each other. After I told him what the dealer said, he smiled and said "You probably don't need a trans." He hadn't even looked at it yet. I must have looked like I didn't believe him, so he called one of the mechanics into the office and said to the guy: "2001 RAV4. Does he need a whole new trans?" And the mechanic didn't hesitate and said "NO". I asked how he could say that. He said he has worked on maybe 25 RAV4s with transmission problems, and approx. 23 of them didn't need a new transmission.

What it needed was an electronic module on the trans. $1200 from Toyota, $800 from a supplier he had. We were back on the road in a day and a half. That SUV was fine after that, right up until my daughter traded it in at 200K miles.

My 2013 got a new Transmission around 40k. Had vibrations under acceleration that was quite noticeable (I hit an uphill freeway onramp every morning). I believe toyota came back saying it was the final drive, so they gave me a new tranny.

No hassle. I just complained I was feeling something under foot and thought I was crazy.

    Never hurts to ask.

Many do not understand that the typical automotive dealer mechanics do not work on components such as transmissions and drive shafts etc. For the most part they are assembly replacers.

Been there - done that. If a dealers says no, open a case with Toyota.
