can you reach the vent safely from the outside? Have someone turn on the dryer and check the vent from the outside? Just seems weird if it was working ok now its not its something going out. Is there 2 elements in the dry or just one?

bought my house and previous owner had at some point in the past moved the laundry toward the center of the slab. then after that maybe in the 90's there was another round of addition, and the effect was a 20' run of dryer vent line under the slab ( half in the foundation and half under a pool cap). it went down then back up to above the slab to vent. not sure I'd even call that a 'design'. after our 6 months of reno we moved in and 6 weeks later the dryer stopped working and the end of that line was making glug sounds. the entire line was full of water just from the moist vent air. vacuumed it out and 5-6 weeks later same thing. so i shut down the laundry and started a huge round of work to correct it.

the simple solution would have been to vent straight up through the roof, but i took the opportunity to move the laundry out to the garage and convert the laundry room to an office. that required replumbing the hot water through the whole house and adding a second 3" drain line on the other side of the property. massive expense but big improvement. the vent line has been filled and sealed. it ran under my wife's side of the bed in the slab and she could smell the stagnant water.

the new 3"drain had to run about 150'. huge pita but all good now. live & learn the hard & expensive way.

Typically what happens is you have moist hot air from the dryer going into a cold metal vent. It just turns to water and if its not graded down enough moisture just sits in the pipe and it gets too humid to dry your clothes.

Unfortunately if you’ve cleaned it out and its a moisture issue, you’ll want to revent.
But yeah its not fun when you’re tearing up your walls. :(

Yeah, I’ll check that when I get home.
It lost effectiveness when it moved houses which makes me think it’s the vent system.
I’m not sure on the number of elements, I didn’t pull the cover off when I had it apart, heat isn’t an issue though because if you run the dryer for 20 minutes the clothes are warm (110-120 degrees) even though they’re wet.

Another reason I’m looking at the vent is because there’s some lint trying to escape the drum out the front which indicates excess back pressure.

    Looks good!

I’m working on painting the bath vanity and its been one heck of a job so far. Kitchen cabinets are already painted but need to be redone. I’m not looking foward to that project.

What paint are you using for the cabinets?

It’s not even metal, it appears to be ABS or PVC (it’s some sort of plastic but paint makes it difficult to see the original color) and the vent guard on the outside of the slab was just glued on so I’ll have to get some small concrete screws so I can remove it to clean it for the time being.

I’ll have to do some measurements but we may be able to get away with just pulling the Sheetrock in our office closer to run the vent.

It’s better to vent upwards (and then out) anyway because heat rises, correct?

    Thanks!

Used a bonding primer, 2 coats sanded in between each coat. For the paint we are using Sherwin Williams Pro Classic acrylic latex in a satin finish, 2 coats. Snowbound is the color.

Is there good flow to the outside vent when the dryer is running? Maybe the problem is in the dryer, sometimes a lot of lint will build up just past the filter where it tapers down. Maybe try running the brush through there a few times with the filter removed.

I disassembled the dryer (including removing and cleaning where the filter goes and the dryer itself flows well (tested after re-assembly) before being attached to the house vent.

I’ve never thought about that, it’s fairly tight, the loosest fit is the front door (1/8 gap when the wipe isn’t on it) but it’s not toght enough to have a tangible pressure wave when you close a door and everything else is closed.
    I’ll have to try that.

I’m not a builder or contractor BUT I thought it was against the fire codes to have a PVC vent pipe from the dryer because if you ever have a fire start in the dryer it will keep the fire going more than metal.
