To answer my own question for the Second Gen owners out there: it appears to be on the fourth page of my owners manual. And @4x4Runner pointed this out 12 years ago in 2006

 

Used to work in the intel community. Apps and social media have been a game changer...that's all I'll say.

OnStar is one of the most nefarious things I've seen put in a vehicle "for your convenience". Its security is also SUPER lax.

 

Privacy is rapidly becoming an obsolete concept, and we are doing it voluntarily.

Cel phones that track your every move, sharing everything on social media, cameras everywhere, putting devices in our own houses that are constantly listening....

Unless you want to move to the middle of nowhere and give up on most modern conveniences you might as well get used to it.

Big brother IS watching, and it's obvious.

One small example, a guy I used to work with, who moved to a different department, stops by to say hello.

Now, I have not spoken to or seen this guy in 2 or 3 years.

That very same afternoon Facebook pops him up as a friend suggestion.

Yeah, "they" are watching everything.

I've decided that I'm not going to worry about it, there is no point. I have a boring life anyway.

 

Carfax gets your mileage and other info about your vehicle from when you take it in for service...whether it's to Toyota or Jiffy Lube, that information is shared with places like Carfax and probably your insurance provider, too. Only way to avoid having it happen is to do all of your own maintenance and repairs.

 

Toyota is getting my stats beamed to them. They are impressed. They see my rpms, yaw rate, speed....they be all like damn that 4 banger is KICKIN on those winding mountain roads

After thinking about it GM vehicles to my knowledge are the only ones with on-star and coincidentally that company is primary owned by the US government.

 

I'd say you're thinking too much into it. Not that I'm in the market for a GM vehicle anyway, but I would certainly ever get one with onstar.
